IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that in most parts of the world people usually want to own a home rather than living in a rented house. Its because they want to decorate and design their home themselves and live according to their expectations. I think its a positive situation because it motivates individuals to work hard and earn more to biuld their own house so that their children can live comfortably.

Turning to the details, many residents want to own a house because they want to design their home according to their own taste. Moreover, they can select that which is the best location for the different rooms and kitchens in the house. As a result, it provides them freedom to do whatever they want to do with their home. For instance, if someone has a single storey house and he want to build another storey he can easily change it if he had enough funds but in rented home the choices are limited and there is no security of the long term settlement.

Furthermore, i beleive that it is a positive situation as it encourages individuals to work hard to build their own home. In addition, it is a fixed asset which promises long term security and future stability due to the increase in its value with time. For example, in the countries where population is too high and real estate is in demand the value of houses will increase in the future era which beats inflation. Finally, i think they want to secure their children's future so that they can live peacefully without worry about any other expenses like rent.

In conclusion, most of the people want to own home for different security reasons which is a good thing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, exploring reasons why homeownership is important and giving a clear opinion that this situation is positive. The student attempts to extend ideas regarding personalization and financial security. For example, the mention of building a second storey illustrates customisation, and the point about real estate beating inflation touches on economic stability. However, some arguments remain somewhat repetitive and under-developed, relying on generalised statements rather than deep elaboration. Consequently, the task response sits comfortably at Band 6, as all parts are addressed with relevant ideas, though further depth and extension are needed to reach the next band level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introductory paragraph, body paragraphs addressing distinct points, and a brief conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Turning to the details', 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are employed to guide the reader through the text. However, paragraphing and referencing are occasionally basic or mechanical. For instance, the transition into the final body paragraph feels slightly abrupt, and the pronoun referencing in phrases like 'i think they want to secure their children's future' lacks a precise antecedent. Overall, the organizational structure is adequate and logical, justifying a Band 6 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'fixed asset', 'future stability', and 'inflation'. Meaning is generally conveyed clearly despite some word-choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'biuld' instead of 'build', 'beleive' instead of 'believe', and awkward phrasing like 'in the future era'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to allow some flexibility, lexical control is inconsistent, and limitations in collocation place this response at Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures like 'if someone has a single storey house and he want to build another storey he can easily change it'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('he want' instead of 'he wants', 'Its because' instead of 'It is because'), capitalization errors ('i'), and missing articles. Punctuation is also weak in places, such as the double spacing before 'for'. These errors rarely impede communication, but they restrict the range of error-free sentences, aligning the grammar with a Band 5.5 or 6.0 descriptor; a Band 6 is awarded as meaning is successfully maintained throughout.
