IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In certain countries, people place great importance on purchasing their own home rather than purchasing rented accomodation. Although some might consider it negative, I believe it to be extremely beneficial. Not only because of financial security and stability and independence, but also because of long term investment.

There are multiple advantage associated with owning their homes. Firstly, financial security can be considered as the leading benefit of this development. As there is no need to pay rent so in such case we gain stability. Take the example fo Germany, a survey conducted in 2023, which showed that 60% of people whos have own home are more financial stabel.

Secondly, apart from financial security, stability and independence can be labelled as the other major benefit. If they have their own home so there is no rent for this and also feel cofusion free. For example, in Japan government provide home to every citizen so all of the people feel independence.

Finally, long term investment can also be considered as the leading benfit of this development. As with the passage of time land prices increased and thus they considered as the huge investment.

To sum up, even though having there own home might have some drawbacks too, but I believe in terms of financial security, feeling of independence and long term term investment can make this development a positive one.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt by explaining why home ownership is important and offering an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the length requirement has not been met, as the response contains only 228 words, falling short of the 250-word minimum. This under-length restriction caps the Task Achievement score. Furthermore, while the ideas of financial security and independence are introduced, they are under-developed and supported by questionable or fabricated examples, such as the claim that the Japanese government provides homes to every citizen. The position is clear, but the lack of sufficient word count and depth prevents a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays a basic overall structure with an introduction, body paragraphs signaled by transitional markers like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Finally', and a brief conclusion. However, cohesion is often mechanical and sometimes faulty, as seen in awkward phrasing like 'If they have their own home so there is no rent for this'. Paragraphing is attempted, but some paragraphs are overly brief and lack internal logical progression. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun use in 'thus they considered as the huge investment'. Overall progression is somewhat disjointed, placing it firmly in the band 5 category.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, but it is repetitive and limited in range. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'financial security', 'independence', and 'long term investment', but these are reused multiple times rather than varied. There are also noticeable lexical and collocational errors, such as writing 'purchasing rented accomodation' (rented accommodation cannot be purchased) and 'whos have own home are more financial stabel'. Spelling errors like 'accomodation', 'fo', 'cofusion', 'benfit', and 'stabel' also detract from the quality, reflecting typical band 5 characteristics.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with sentence fragments and poor clause structures, such as 'Not only because of financial security and stability and independence, but also because of long term investment' and 'As there is no need to pay rent so in such case we gain stability.' Errors also occur with verb tenses and agreement, such as 'land prices increased and thus they considered as the huge investment'. While basic meaning is generally communicated, the frequency of errors places this in the band 5 range.
