IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In today's modern world, the topic of whether its better to own a home than renting one holds profound importance. Many people argue that owning a home has greater benefits than renting one. The reason for this stance can be personal as well as economical.
There are multiple factors associated with why people believe owning a house is of greater benefit than a rented one. Firstly, one of the major reason behind this is economical situation worldwide. In today's world where inflation is increasing day-by-day, owning your own property such as a house posses long-term benefits. Moreover, renting a house demands individuals to pay a major portion of their salaries as rents which can be hard for middle-class families to manage at times. For example, a report by World Economic Forum suggests people who own their own houses suffer financially less than that of those who live in rented ones. Furthermore, a self-owned house can serve as a crucial asset at the time of need.
Secondly, other important reasons for people to compel towards owning your own house are personal and social benefits. Owning your own house not only results in greater confidence and improved self-esteem of the individual but also make them of higher status in the society as compared to residents of rented homes. For example, a housewife having a property on her own name make her independent and valuable in her circle.
Considering the merits of owning a house, I strongly believe that this is a positive situation and a dire necessity for people today. With world going through an economic crisis, everybody should invest and start working towards owning their own home as soon as they possibly can.
To sum up, even though there might seem temporary financial benefits in renting a house, I believe that owning your own house posses greater and long-term personal and financial benefits. To me, people of some countries inclining towards owning a house is a highly positive situation and more people should consider this rather than renting one.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses both parts of the task prompt by explaining why home ownership is important and discussing whether this is a positive or negative situation. The writer presents a clear position throughout the essay, arguing that economic and social factors drive this trend and that it is ultimately a positive development. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as referencing a report by the World Economic Forum and discussing social status and independence. However, some arguments, particularly regarding social benefits, tend to over-generalise or remain slightly under-developed. Nevertheless, all parts of the prompt are well-covered, meeting the criteria for a Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The writer uses standard paragraphing effectively, with distinct introduction, body, and concluding sections. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore', although there is occasional mechanical over-use of transitional phrases. Referencing is generally clear, and each body paragraph has a distinct central topic that links well back to the prompt. The overall arrangement is coherent, guiding the reader smoothly from the introduction of the topic to the final personal stance, fitting the Band 7 descriptor.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items and academic phrases such as 'profound importance', 'inflation', 'crucial asset', and 'self-esteem'. There is adequate control over common word choices, though some lexical inaccuracies occur, such as writing 'posses' instead of 'possesses' and 'compel towards' instead of 'gravitate towards' or 'incline towards'. Spelling errors are minimal and do not impede communication, and the writer's attempts at using precise vocabulary display an awareness of style, aligning closely with a Band 6.5 or 7.0, supported securely at Band 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional-like clauses and relative clauses. There is a good variety of sentence forms attempted. However, there are several noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, such as missing apostrophes ('its' instead of 'it's'), incorrect verb forms ('make her' instead of 'makes her'), and agreement issues ('reason behind this is economical situation' missing an article). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors persist, they rarely impede communication. This balance of mixed structures and frequent minor errors is characteristic of Band 6.
