IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

One of the most topical and widely discussed issues in modern society is owing a home rather than renting one. owing house is good for all the people because they get a privacy and safety at their home. In this essay, I will examine both sides of the arguments and provide my overall opinion.

From an overall perspectives, there are a number of positive of owing home. Perhaps the main positive of owing house is they feel safe at their own house because they stay with their family and relatives. Secondly, they can earn money through owing house is that they provide a renting room for other people. For example it helps to earn money in end of the month. furthermore, no landlord tension because they can easily decorate their home.

Despite these arguments, many people feel that owing house rather than renting one has negative aspects for a reasons. A further point in favor of peopel were get a loan for their house because it will be long term process for 20- 24 years. For example people were depressed with anxiety. Secondly, less flexibility because in the future people jobs were be transfered in one place to another which may hard for people to sale their house. In conclusion, it must be said that owing a home rather than renting has clear positive and negative. Having considered both sides of the issue, I would argue that owing home has positive rather than negative side because peope have privacy and safety in their house.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing why homeownership is important and providing an opinion on whether this trend is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is limited and sometimes repetitive. For instance, the reasons given for the benefits of homeownership focus heavily on safety and privacy, such as 'they feel safe at their own house because they stay with their family and relatives,' without much extension. The counter-argument regarding mortgages and lack of flexibility is introduced but remains basic. Furthermore, there is a slight contradiction in the conclusion where the student promises to examine 'both sides of the arguments' in the introduction, which is typical of a discussion essay, yet the prompt asks 'Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?', making this a hybrid style essay. Overall, it satisfies the basic requirements for a Band 5.5 to 6.0, but the depth of support keeps it at a Band 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has an overall structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is attempted, though the division could be clearer. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often repetitive or mechanical, such as 'Secondly,' 'For example,' and 'furthermore.' Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in sentences like 'owing house is good for all the people because they get a privacy and safety at their home,' where pronouns and articles are misused. The progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by abrupt transitions and repetitive sentence starters. While the essay remains coherent enough to be followed, the faulty cohesion and mechanical linking devices place this criterion firmly at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary is repetitive and basic, relying heavily on words like 'owing' (used instead of 'owning' or 'homeownership'), 'house,' 'money,' and 'people.' There are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, such as 'owing house is good,' 'renting room,' and 'landlord tension.' Attempts to use less common vocabulary are generally inaccurate or unnatural, such as 'peopel were get a loan' or 'jobs were be transfered.' These lexical limitations and frequent inaccuracies cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a Band 5.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, with frequent errors in basic grammar, tense formation, and sentence construction. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex structures frequently result in serious errors, such as 'peopel were get a loan for their house because it will be long term process' and 'jobs were be transfered in one place to another which may hard for people to sale their house.' There are persistent punctuation and article errors (e.g., 'a privacy', 'at their home'). These frequent grammatical errors cause significant difficulty for the reader and heavily restrict the complexity of the writing, aligning with a Band 5.0.
