IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, in many cities there are some discussions about having a own house rather than renting one is more safest option due to increase in prices in all sectors. I strongly believe that owning a house rather than renting will be a better choice for people and it will create a postive sitauation in every life.

On the one hand, people who lives in a country which has rapid development in all sectors should own a house instead of renting one. This is because due to development prices of evey single need increases including a piece of land. Although owning a house is embeded with money and need lots of efforts, it has more benifits. For example, if a family takes a house loan for owning a flat in place of renting home. They will pay loan instalments instead of paying rent. As result, they owns a comforable flat according to their requirments. After clearing all the instalments of loan and beyond that they can save money for other purposes.

On the other hand, in every life owning a dream house will play an important role. This is because it creates postive situations such as respect in society, parents feel proud and having a good environment. For instance, if a person own a house in a place where he live since his childhood by doing more hardwork and saving money for it. Then people see his success in it and parents feel proud also you recieve positive respect from everyone. As a result, people don't see the process you made and efforts you put, they only see the results and how much impact you created.

In conclusion, people always own a house as much as possible. One of the reasons is that due to development there is a chance of hiking prices like gold and silver. At last, I believe that owning a house with lots of effort reflects with positve situations and gives peak satisfaction in society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing why homeownership is important and giving a clear opinion that it is a positive situation. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are generally relevant, such as financial benefits and societal respect, though they are somewhat repetitive and under-developed in places. For instance, the discussion on societal respect is generalized and could be supported with more concrete examples. The writer attempts to explain the financial logic of paying a mortgage instead of rent, but the reasoning is occasionally obscured by language errors. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, separating the introduction, two body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'For example' are used to structure the text, although some referencing is imprecise (e.g., 'As a result, people don't see the process you made'). Paragraph progression is generally logical, moving from financial reasons to social aspects, though internal sentence connections can be a bit mechanical or faulty. Overall, the organizational structure meets the requirements for a Band 6.0 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'embeded', 'instalments', and 'satisfaction'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'postive' instead of 'positive', 'sitauation', 'benifits', and 'hiking prices'. Collocations are sometimes unnatural, such as 'embeded with money'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to Band 5.5 because precision and accurate spelling of less common vocabulary are lacking.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though complex structures are frequently faulty. There are persistent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('people who lives', 'a person own'), article misuse ('having a own house'), and awkward phrasing ('reflects with positve situations'). Punctuation and sentence boundaries occasionally cause confusion, particularly in longer sentences. However, the meaning is generally retrievable despite the frequent errors. These characteristics align closely with the Band 5.0 descriptors.
