IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In many countries buying home is prefered as compared to live in a rented house.

People refers to have their own home mostly in Asian countries and those countries which are under developing. If we buy a home we do not have to pay for the rent and the amount will be saved and we we will invest it in some other works. Owning our own property means we have assets and we are not hand to mouth people and if we buy it we have a right to organize it according to our taste. We do not need anyone permission to change anything in the house. We will manage everything according to will. If the difficult time comes we have a right to sale it in emergency and property prices are increasing day by day and it is a big investment.

If we do not have any home we have to obey every rule told by owner and have to pay a rent monthly and if we do not pay we have to leave the house. In this era if we want to live in a good house the prices are to high and your half of the income will go in rents and their is no saving for you. You have to pay 2 rents as a security in case of any damage in the house. You are not allowed to change anything in rented house and if you break or destroy anything then your security will non refundable.

In conclusion owing a house is very benfical and profitable in my point of view.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing reasons why home ownership is important and stating a clear position that this is a positive situation. Ideas such as financial saving, avoiding rent rules, and having freedom to modify the property are introduced. However, these points remain somewhat repetitive and lack deeper extension or specific examples. For instance, the discussion around financial benefits relies heavily on general statements without deeper elaboration. While the prompt asks 'Why might this be the case?' and 'Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?', the development stays at a surface level, fitting the Band 5 to 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays a basic overall progression, starting with an introduction, moving to body paragraphs supporting ownership, discussing the counter-perspective of renting, and finishing with a conclusion. However, paragraphing is underdeveloped, as the second body paragraph awkwardly groups contrasting ideas about renting and buying together. Cohesive devices are simple, repetitive, or faulty, such as 'if we buy a home... and if we buy it... and if the difficult time comes', which creates a mechanical flow. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and logical links between sentences require the reader to infer connections.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on everyday terms like 'buy a home', 'money', 'rent', and 'house'. There are notable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'buying home is prefered as compared to live' instead of 'buying a home is preferred compared to living', and 'sale it' instead of 'sell it'. Spelling mistakes like 'benfical' also appear. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic message, the frequent errors and lack of sophisticated phrasing restrict the score to Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text contains a heavy reliance on simple and compound structures, often linked repetitively with coordinating conjunctions like 'and' or conditional 'if' clauses, e.g., 'If we buy a home we do not have to pay for the rent and the amount will be saved and we we will invest it'. Grammatical errors are frequent, including missing articles ('buying home', 'in rented house'), incorrect verb forms ('is prefered', 'to live'), pronoun duplication ('we we will'), and punctuation errors. These frequent errors cause occasional strain for the reader, aligning closely with the Band 5 descriptors.
