IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 4.5)
Undoubtedly, owning home has become a controversial issue in some countries in recent years. I will discuss its postive and negtive impact on society. In my country pakistan owning home is significant for people nowdays. In their home people can easily study, cooking, and watch movies on their television. They can eaisly walking in every corner of the house. Morever, they can celebrate any festival on their home and listen the music easily on their home. In their homes people have more spaces for car or any vehicles parking. They do not pay rent for their home and can easily lived in their home. But in my country some people use homes on renting because they do not afford money to but their own home. Most people in my country are very poor because they have not basic facilities and jobs oppourtunties. More peoplein my country use home on rent because their situation is very crucial. But renting house is very expensive and not provide basic facilities like electricity, shortage of water , lack of gas. I believe it is negative situation in my country. For instance if a person have three children they cannot easily lived in this situation. Nowdays, in my country there is lack of jobs people did not afford house on renting. From my perspective government and individuals make new houses for poor people and give jobs facilities to peoples that they can easily spend life. I belive that if a government makes houses for individuals after few days there is positive effect on people and people can spend life with happines.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing why homeownership is important and whether this is a positive or negative situation. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. For example, the reasons given for the importance of homeownership focus heavily on basic domestic activities like 'cooking', 'watching movies on their television', and 'walking in every corner', which remain under-developed. The student attempts to explain why renting is problematic in their country (mentioning a lack of basic facilities and financial struggles), but the progression of ideas is often obscured by repetition and over-generalisation. A clearer, more structured argument regarding economic factors and cultural values would elevate the response to a higher band. Overall, the task is addressed, corresponding to a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
Coherence and cohesion are significant weaknesses in this essay. The writing lacks proper paragraphing, presented almost entirely as a single dense block of text, which makes logical progression difficult to follow. While basic cohesive devices are used (such as 'Morever', 'For instance', and 'From my perspective'), referencing is frequently unclear, and sentences are often linked mechanically without a logical flow. For instance, the transition from discussing the benefits of owning a home to the struggles of renting in Pakistan lacks a smooth bridge. Paragraphing is not used sufficiently or appropriately to separate the main themes of the essay. Consequently, the organizational structure falls under Band 4.5, rounded to Band 4.5.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently constrained by spelling and word-choice errors. The student relies heavily on simple words and phrases such as 'owning home', 'basic facilities', and 'spend life'. There are numerous lexical and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, including 'postive', 'negtive', 'pakistan', 'nowdays', 'cooking' (used instead of 'cook'), 'eaisly walking', 'Morever', 'oppourtunties', and 'happines'. Although the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the general message about housing and poverty, the persistent errors in collocation and spelling restrict the range and precision of the response. This fits the criteria for Band 4.5, rounded to 4.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting mostly of simple and frequently faulty sentence structures. There are persistent errors in basic grammar, tense usage, articles, and prepositions. Examples of errors include 'owning home has become' (missing article), 'celebrate any festival on their home' (incorrect preposition, should be 'in'), 'listen the music' (unnecessary article), 'do not afford money to but' (incorrect verb choice and spelling of 'buy'), and 'government and individuals make new houses' (tense and modal inconsistencies). Complex sentence attempts often contain severe structural errors, such as in the final sentence: 'I belive that if a government makes houses for individuals after few days there is positive effect...'. These frequent errors frequently cause difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar at Band 4.0.
