IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In many countries, owning a home is an important goal in life. Most of the people prefer to buy their own house because it is associated with stability, security, and financial benefits. In my opinion, to buy their own home has a lot of advantages, although it has many challenges.

On the one hand, individuals who buy their own home have the benefit of security to live safely with their families. They do not have to worry about rent or being asked to leave; in this way, they can live comfortably and enjoy family events with lots of fun. They can decorate their home according to their own taste and use technology that can help in their daily life. For example, they can use the latest kitchen machines, like a dishwasher, flour mixer, and juicer.

Another reason, it can also provide some financial benefits for people who can built there home for the long term investment; the value of the home can increase over time. For example, some people can build houses not for their own use, but also for the financial benefit of future generations.

In modern society, there is a positive attitude about owning a house because it can help to build confidence in one's life and a secure future for their new generation, and also contribute to neighbourhood development.

In conclusion, their is lot of advatages to buy there own home; it provides security, independence, and financial benefits. However, building a house is costly; some people have financial pressure to support their families and meet their daily needs.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by explaining why home ownership is important and discussing whether this trend is positive or negative. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The reasons provided, such as stability, security, and financial benefits, are relevant and extended with examples like avoiding rent and building long-term investments. However, some ideas remain slightly basic and under-developed, such as the mention of kitchen machines and neighbourhood development, which lack deeper elaboration. To reach a higher band, the ideas should be more thoroughly explored and supported with greater depth of argument, avoiding overly simplistic examples. Overall, the task is addressed adequately and meets the criteria for Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as security in the second paragraph and financial benefits in the third. Logical connectors like 'On the one hand', 'Another reason', and 'In conclusion' are employed to guide the reader through the text, although some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional minor cohesion issues appear, such as in the concluding sentence. Overall, the logical organization and progression are sufficient for a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'stability', 'security', 'financial benefits', and 'long-term investment'. There are, however, noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'built there home' instead of 'build their home', 'their is lot of advatages', and 'to buy there own home'. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect limitations in lexical control. Less common vocabulary is attempted with occasional inaccuracy. This performance aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. There are several grammatical errors and instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'to buy their own home has a lot of advantages', 'most of the people prefer', and homophone confusions like 'their' instead of 'there'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors are present, they rarely impede communication. The control over grammar is characteristic of Band 6.0.
