IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Individuals in numerous countries prefer owning a house rather than renting one. I believe it is a positive approach for a number of reasons, such as the possession of a home provides a sense of insurance, authority, a long-term investment and a place near the family, friends and neighbours.
Individuals in many countries lean toward purchasing properties because it provides a sense of insurance and security. For instance, citizens in my home country prefer a place they can call their own because it assures them that, they can live here until their death and even after their death their next generation will have a place to settle in. The surety of owning a home for themselves and their generations to come makes it home for people in my country and countries around the globe.
Furthermore, citizens who prefer staying in one place around their families, neighbours, and friends choose to have a permanent place around them. People who value connection with their loved ones live close to their dear ones and buy houses near them. This way they have their own place and a forever lasting relationship with them. For instance, they share beautiful and sad moments together such as they can stand by each other's side in harsh moments with their neighbours, friends and families. Living close to the loved ones strengthens the connection.
In conclusion, I believe ownership of a house is positve approach because it provide insurance and security for long term and a place close to the people one care about the most and can stand side by side with them through thick and thin.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why homeownership is important and giving a clear position that it is a positive situation. In the introduction, you outline reasons such as security, authority, and long-term investment, and you maintain a clear position throughout the essay. The body paragraphs expand on these points, particularly discussing security for future generations and the social benefits of living close to family and friends. However, some ideas feel slightly repetitive, particularly the discussion around community ties and family in the second body paragraph and conclusion. To reach a higher band, ideas could be extended with more varied real-world examples rather than reiterating similar themes. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are addressed, and your position is clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Each paragraph has a discernible focus, starting with an introduction that outlines your stance, followed by body paragraphs exploring security and community ties, and ending with a concise conclusion. You make use of cohesive devices to guide the reader through your arguments, such as 'Furthermore', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and paragraph internal cohesion occasionally feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the transition between ideas could be smoother, and some sentences within the body paragraphs are somewhat convoluted, which slightly disrupts the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but overall cohesion could be more flexible and natural to achieve a higher score.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'insurance and security', 'next generation', and 'forever lasting relationship'. There are, however, some word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as writing 'positve' instead of 'positive', and some awkward collocations like 'possession of a home provides a sense of insurance' where 'financial security' or 'stability' might be more natural. Your vocabulary allows you to convey your message clearly, and communication is never impeded by lexical errors. To improve your lexical score, focus on precision in word choice and incorporating more sophisticated paraphrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You display a mix of simple and complex sentence structures throughout the essay, successfully utilising relative clauses and conditional-like phrasing such as 'citizens who prefer staying in one place around their families... choose to have a permanent place'. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues present, such as unnecessary comma splices ('...assures them that, they can live here...'), missing articles, and occasional awkward phrasing like 'it is a positive approach because it provide insurance'. These errors are generally non-systematic and do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow your arguments easily. A greater variety of error-free complex sentences and closer proofreading for subject-verb agreement will help elevate your grammatical score.
