IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, in many cities, there is a discussion about whether owning a house rather than renting one is the safest option, especially due to the increase in prices in all sectors. I strongly believe that owning a house rather than renting one is a better choice for people, and it can have a positive impact on everyone's life.

On the one hand, people who live in a country that is rapidly developing in all sectors should consider owning a house instead of renting one. This is because, due to development, the prices of almost every necessity increase, including the price of land. Although owning a house requires a considerable amount of money and effort, it has several benefits. For example, if a family takes out a home loan to own a flat instead of renting a home, they will pay loan instalments rather than rent. As a result, they can eventually own a comfortable flat according to their requirements. After paying off all the instalments of the loan, they can save money for other purposes.

On the other hand, owning a dream house can play an important role in everyone's life. This is because it can create positive situations, such as gaining respect in society, making parents feel proud and providing a good living environment. For instance, if a person owns a house in the place where they have lived since childhood after working hard and saving money for it, people can see their success, and their parents may also feel proud of them. As a result, people may not see the entire process or the effort that a person has put into achieving their goal; they only see the final result and the impact that person has made.

In conclusion, people always try to own a house if possible. One of the reasons is that, due to development, there is a possibility that property prices will continue to rise, similar to the prices of assets such as gold and silver. Overall, I believe that owning a house after putting in considerable effort can provide a sense of achievement, financial security and great satisfaction.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task. The introduction presents a clear position that owning a home is better than renting and constitutes a positive development. Body paragraph one explores why home ownership is important due to development and rising land prices, supporting this with the logical example of paying loan instalments rather than dead rent. Body paragraph two discusses the social and psychological benefits, such as gaining respect and making parents proud. The conclusion nicely reiterates the main stance. The ideas are extended and supported effectively throughout, aligning well with the Band 7 requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the introduction to the economic arguments, the social arguments, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used appropriately, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'For example'. Paragraphing is well managed with a clear introduction, two distinct body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. Referencing is generally clear, contributing to an easy flow of ideas. While cohesion is sometimes slightly formulaic, it meets the standard for Band 7.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'rapidly developing in all sectors', 'financial security', and 'sense of achievement' show a good command of topic-specific language. There are also successful attempts at less common items like 'instalments' and 'assets'. While there are a few minor word choice repetitions (such as repeatedly using 'owning a house rather than renting one'), the vocabulary is adequate to convey precise meanings without impeding communication, fitting the Band 6.5 to 7 profile comfortably.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and relative clauses (e.g., 'if a family takes out a home loan...', 'in the place where they have lived since childhood'). There are frequent error-free sentences, and grammar and punctuation are generally well controlled. Although there are some minor awkward phrasings, such as 'create positive situations, such as gaining respect', these do not impede communication. The control demonstrated over complex forms places this securely at Band 7.
