IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 4.5)

Im many countries people think that owning a home is better than the rent one. So they takes a lot of the time to discuss the topic. Many people go abroad due to any reason, so they lived there. I give my oponion with the prove of the example.

I think owning a home is better than the renting, because in some countries houses rest is very high so that is why paying rent for every month is very difficuilt. If a man salary is 6000$ of the month and the rent is 5000$, how he will survive there. All of the salary is finished for paying house rent. First of all in starts people wants to live in the renting house, he saved the money. When he able for buying the home, he buyed it. In start it very difficuilt for this but slowly he will very good for this.

It is a negative situation, in renting home people is not feels very easy there. When the owner said to sel his home what will the renters d? That is why owning a home is very better and secure. If the people live in the owing home he will be able to spent their life is a very easy way. They do'nt face any difficultie. When people bought their home all thing very easy from them.

To sum up the result is owning the home is better than the renting one. There are many advantage from it. They live very easy and good life. Almost all countries the rent of the home is reached at very high rate which is very difficuilt to pay it. Iife is very tough in this world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address both parts of the prompt: why owning a home is important and whether it is a positive or negative situation. The writer presents a clear position that owning a home is better and considers this a negative situation in terms of rental stress and vulnerability. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. For instance, the argument relies heavily on simple assertions about high rent, such as 'If a man salary is 6000$ of the month and the rent is 5000$, how he will survive there.' While the main points are somewhat addressed, the support lacks depth and structure. The response meets the criteria for Band 5 by addressing the task partially with limited idea extension.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

Paragraphing is attempted, with distinct blocks of text representing different sections of the essay, though the logical progression is frequently disrupted by weak referencing and repetitive phrasing. Cohesive devices are minimal or inaccurate, such as 'First of all in starts people wants...' and 'That is why...'. There is an over-reliance on basic conjunctions and repetitive sentence starters. Referencing pronouns are occasionally ambiguous, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of arguments smoothly. Overall, the organization shows some logical intent but lacks cohesive control, aligning with Band 4.5 or a weak Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is very basic, repetitive, and limited, relying on high-frequency words such as 'good', 'bad', 'money', 'house', and 'rent'. There are numerous word choice errors and incorrect collocations, including 'the rent one', 'houses rest', 'owing home', and 'buyed'. Spelling mistakes are also present, such as 'difficuilt', 'oponion', and 'prove'. These lexical limitations and frequent inaccuracies restrict the response to a Band 4.0 level, as the range is too basic and errors frequently strain the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The grammatical range is extremely limited. The essay consists mostly of simple sentences, and attempted complex structures are almost always faulty, such as in conditional and relative clauses ('If the people live in the owing home he will be able to spent their life is a very easy way'). There are persistent, highly frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, tense usage ('he buyed it', 'people is not feels'), and preposition choice. These frequent grammatical errors cause significant difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from achieving a higher band score.
