IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Nowadays, In many countries, people consider owning a house more important than renting. This essay will discuss the reasons behind this preference and argue that it is a largely positive development.
There are two main reasons why home ownership is so valued. Firstly, it provides a sense of security and stability. When people own their house, they do not have to worry about a landlord increasing the rent or asking them to leave. For example, in my city Bahawalpur, having your own house is a matter of pride and respect in society, and families feel more stable. Secondly, owning a house is seen as a smart financial investment. Instead of paying rent every month, which is an expense with no return, mortgage payments build an asset that can be passed to children. In many cultures, parents want to leave a property for their children as a form of financial security.
I believe this is a mostly positive situation. Owning a home gives people emotional security and financial freedom in the long term. A family with its own home can make changes to the house and lives without stress. However, there is one negative aspect. In many countries, house prices are very high, so young people have to take large loans from banks and remain in debt for many years. This financial pressure can be stressful.
In conclusion, people prefer to own a home because it offers stability and is a good investment for the future. Although it can cause financial burden, I think the advantages of security and long-term benefit outweigh the disadvantages, so it is a positive trend

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the reasons why home ownership is important and whether this trend is positive or negative. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The reasons provided in the second paragraph, such as the desire for security and financial investment, are well developed with relevant examples like societal respect in Bahawalpur and building equity. The evaluation of the situation in the third paragraph effectively balances the emotional and financial benefits against the drawback of high debt among young people. Overall, the ideas are extended and supported adequately, satisfying the requirements for a Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with an introduction, followed by body paragraphs dedicated to reasons and evaluation, and ending with a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively, ensuring that the transition of ideas flows smoothly. Referencing is generally clear, contributing to a coherent overall structure that aligns well with the Band 7.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision. Terms such as 'financial investment', 'mortgage payments', and 'emotional security' show an appropriate command of topic-specific language. There are also attempts at less common vocabulary items like 'equity' equivalents and 'societal respect'. While vocabulary is mostly adequate for the task, there is a minor mechanical error in capitalization in the opening sentence ('Nowadays, In many countries'), and some phrases like 'lives without stress' could be more idiomatic. These occasional inaccuracies place the response firmly at Band 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The student successfully employs subordinate clauses, such as 'When people own their house, they do not have to worry...' and 'Instead of paying rent every month, which is an expense with no return...'. There is good control over grammar and punctuation overall, with frequent error-free sentences. Minor lapses occur, such as the singular/plural mismatch in 'changes to the house and lives without stress'. However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication, supporting a solid Band 7.0 score.
