IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In today's society, many people wants to pucrhase their own land to build a home or considers buying a home. In few Countries owning a home rather renting one is important for the people. i think this situation have some positive aspects but this is more towards negative aspects.
Firstly, buying a home can bring financial security and stabiltity. However, buying a house can bring too much pressure on most of the poeple as it requires huge amount of money. People who have to travel or have to stay long term in different countries or states for work cannot purchase houses , renting a house wil be more flexible option. For those who priortise buying a house will place lot things on hold like education, travel or starting a business whereas renting a house can be a lot easier for younger professionals who are still working on their goals and education. For example, I travel a lot and have to move to different states for work where i prefer to find an accomdation on rent according to my budget rather than buying a house.
Secondly, if more starts to buy house rather than renting can negatively affect the business of people whose source of income rely on renting. Additionally, Landlords will start to face sudden decline in demand of renting which will bring loss to then and they might have to shut their business as this can be their sole way of earning. For example, if large number of people in cities starts to buy their own houses, landlors may struggles to find tenants which can results in lower rental income or financial losses of owning property.
In conclusion, buying a house can be major success for some people. However, I believe this is more likely a negative stuation as many people will struggle to find home for renting who frequenty moves to different places for jobs or education especially younger proffesionals and can affect people businesses whose properties are traditonally dependent on renting or tenants.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, exploring reasons why home ownership is important and discussing whether this situation is positive or negative. The writer presents a clear position throughout, stating that while home ownership brings financial stability, the overall situation tends to be negative due to the pressure it places on individuals and the adverse effects on the rental market. Ideas are extended with relevant examples, such as the mention of mobile professionals and the impact on landlords. However, some arguments, like the economic impact on landlords, are slightly generalized and could be more fully developed to reach a higher band. Overall, the task is adequately addressed in line with Band 6 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs exploring different aspects of the prompt, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion' are used to structure the text, although some referencing is slightly faulty or mechanical (e.g., 'if more starts to buy house'). Paragraphing is used appropriately, but transitional phrases between sentences could be smoother to enhance the flow. Cohesion is generally manageable, meeting the criteria for a Band 6 score.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'financial security', 'flexibility', and 'rental income'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'pucrhase', 'Countries', 'stabiltity', 'poeple', 'priortise', 'accomdation', 'landlors', 'results', and 'proffesionals'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they reflect limitations in lexical control and spelling accuracy, placing the response firmly in the Band 5 to 6 range. With better proofreading and precise word choice, a higher score would be achievable.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('many people wants', 'situation have', 'more starts', 'landlors may struggles'), missing articles ('on rent', 'on hold'), and punctuation lapses. Despite these frequent errors, the meaning is generally clear and communication is rarely impeded. The mix of structures combined with persistent inaccuracies points directly to the Band 5 descriptors, where frequent errors in grammar and punctuation are common.
