IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In some countries people owning a home rather than others renting one is very important. Both aspect are equally right.

Owing home is a benefit for owner if he live long period of time.Or else Owner can rent her home or sell her home at anytime. But home takes a long time to sell or to find tenants. Many consequences faces if you own a home like renovation, cleaning or much more things.

Renting home is easy for those who cannot effort home for some particular period of time. Renting is usually suitable for those person who move frequently. Renting prefer those who is young or worker. It usually required less money.

In conclusion, renting offers flexibility and can be more suitable for people who frequently change their location. However, owning a home provides greater stability, freedom and potential financial benefits in the long term. Therefore, people who have sufficient financial resources and plan to remain in one place for many years may find home ownership more suitable.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address both parts of the task, explaining reasons why home ownership is important and discussing whether it is a positive or negative situation. However, the severe under-length issue heavily penalises this score. The task explicitly requires a minimum of 250 words, whereas this response contains only 168 words. Consequently, the ideas are underdeveloped and lack the necessary depth and extension expected for an Academic Task 2 essay. For example, the reasons for home ownership and renting are touched upon superficially ('Renting home is easy for those who cannot effort home'), but are not fully elaborated with strong arguments or examples. Because the length requirement is not met, the score is restricted to a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays some logical organisation, attempting to separate ideas into paragraphs discussing ownership, renting, and a conclusion. However, overall progression is limited by the briefness of the text. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes inaccurate, such as 'Both aspect are equally right' or the abrupt transitions between sentences like 'Owing home is a benefit for owner if he live long period of time.Or else Owner can rent her home...'. Paragraphing is attempted, but paragraph structures are weak and disjointed. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as the shifting pronouns. These features place the response firmly in the Band 5 category for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, which is characteristic of a Band 5. There are numerous word choice and spelling errors that impede the natural flow of the text, such as 'cannot effort home' instead of 'afford', 'Owing home' instead of 'Owning', and 'Many consequences faces'. The range of vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic ideas about renting and buying, using words like 'flexibility', 'stability', and 'financial resources', but attempts at less common lexical items are consistently flawed. Spelling and morphological errors ('person who move', 'worker' instead of 'workforce') further restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical range is extremely limited, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic structures. When the student attempts more complex constructions, errors frequently occur. Examples of frequent grammatical errors include subject-verb agreement issues ('Both aspect are', 'Many consequences faces'), missing articles ('Owing home is a benefit', 'Renting home is easy'), and incorrect pronoun usage ('if he live', 'rent her home or sell her home'). Punctuation errors also appear, such as the missing space after the full stop in 'time.Or else'. While the meaning is usually retrievable despite these flaws, the high frequency of basic errors and lack of complex sentence control mean the response aligns with Band 5.0 descriptors.
