IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In some countries people owning a home rather than others renting one is very important. Both aspects are equally right.
Owing a home is a benefit for the owner if he lives a long period of time. Or else Owner can rent there home or sell her home at any time. But home takes a long time to sell or to find tenants. Many consequences faced if you own a home like renovation, cleaning or much more things.
Renting a home is easy for those who cannot afford home for some particular period of time. Renting is usually suitable for that person who move frequently. Renting is prefer by those who is young or worker. It usually required less money.
In conclusion, renting offers flexibility and can be more suitable for people who frequently change their location. However, owning a home provides greater stability, freedom and potential financial benefits in the long term. Therefore, people who have sufficient financial resources and plan to remain in one place for many years may find home ownership more suitable.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing why homeownership is important and whether it is a positive or negative situation, but the ideas are underdeveloped and the text is severely under length at only 176 words compared to the minimum requirement of 250 words. The student touches upon reasons for owning a home, such as stability and financial benefits, and reasons for renting, such as flexibility. However, the position is sometimes unclear or contradictory, noting initially that 'both aspects are equally right' before providing a more structured conclusion. Due to the significant under-length penalty and the lack of full development for all parts of the prompt, the task achievement is limited.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text shows an attempt at basic organization, dividing the essay into an introduction, body points, and a conclusion. However, overall progression is limited by the brevity of the response and abrupt transitions between sentences, such as 'Or else Owner can rent there home...' Paragraphing is partially utilized, but cohesive devices are basic, repetitive, or missing. Referencing is sometimes unclear, for example, using pronouns like 'her home' or 'there home' incorrectly. While the conclusion successfully summarizes the main points using some logical connectors, the overall cohesion remains disjointed and mechanical, fitting the lower-middle bands well.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, featuring common words like 'home', 'rent', 'money', and 'people'. There are noticeable word choice and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'Owing a home' instead of 'Owning', 'there home' instead of 'their home', and 'her home'. Some less common items are attempted, such as 'renovation', 'frequently', and 'sufficient financial resources', but their usage is undermined by collocation errors and inaccuracies. The limited range and recurrent lexical errors place this response firmly in the band 5 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and moderately complex sentence structures, but many attempts at complexity contain structural flaws and frequent grammatical errors. Examples include missing articles ('cannot afford home', 'It usually required less money') and incorrect subject-verb agreement or pronoun usage ('Renting is prefer by those who is young or worker'). Punctuation is generally basic, and capitalization is occasionally misused. While simple sentences are usually understandable, the frequency of grammatical errors causes some difficulty and distraction for the reader, aligning with the descriptors for band 5.
