IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some nations, people prefers buying a house rather than renting one. This is a positive situation, since owning means complete control, and it is always better than renting and it is often considered as higher status in the society.

Owning a home provides complete freedom over the house, whereas, for renting, people have to accept some terms and conditions to live there set by the land lords. In some countries people are more free-spirited than others, they usually do not want to follow the rules set by others. So, they want to buy a house to gain complete control. For example, people in USA try to buy their first house, even if with 30 years term mortgage, within their 30s.

Secondly, in some countries house ownership means status and respect. People are seen as higher class who owns a house. For instance, people of south asian countries use their life savings to buy a house before and after retirements. Specially while marrying their child, in those culture, house ownership of the parents is an important parameter.

However, there are some negative side of it. To purchase a house, people often have to take loan a huge amount of money, which creates a significant amount of mental pressure for the earning person of the family. Sometimes people saves money throughout their live to just own a house after their retirement. One clear example is, in some lower earning countries like Bangladesh, the average yearly income for a family is about 600,000 BDT. To buy a house in a decent place, it takes almost 8,000,000-10,000,000 BDT. To save up the huge amount of money, they spends their entire young-hood.

In conclusion, despite of having some negative sides, owning a house has significant amount of benefits. So, overall, owning a home is always a good investment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by explaining why homeownership is important (freedom, status) and discussing whether this is a positive or negative situation. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of 30-year mortgages in the USA and specific income versus housing cost comparisons in Bangladesh. However, there is a tendency to over-generalise in places, and some arguments could have been further refined. Overall, the task is addressed well, aligning closely with the Band 7 descriptor requirements for fully engaging with all prompt elements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, reasons for buying, negative aspects, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are employed to guide the reader through the text, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional minor slip-ups in pronoun agreement or connective phrasing occur. The overall arrangement is coherent, fulfilling the Band 6 to 7 requirements well.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'free-spirited', 'life savings', 'parameter', and 'young-hood'. However, there are noticeable word choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'prefers' instead of 'prefer', 'earning person', and 'take loan a huge amount of money'. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect a Band 6 level where vocabulary control shows inconsistency and occasional inaccuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and relative clauses like 'whereas, for renting, people have to accept some terms and conditions to live there set by the land lords.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors in subject-verb agreement ('people prefers', 'who owns'), article usage ('in the society'), and prepositional phrases ('in those culture'). Punctuation is also occasionally faulty. These errors rarely impede communication, placing the response squarely at Band 6 for grammatical accuracy and range.
