IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In some parts of the world people concidered it very significant that you must have your own home instead of rented apartment. This is due to the fact that renting a home consumes much of your income and gives you have no future safety. I belive that owning a home is positive situation.

Firstly, owning a home is very benifical for your finance as well as for your mental health. When you have your own home you donot have to pay monthly rent consequently you can save money for your future. Furthermore, this also gives you mental peace as you donot have to worry about paying rent every month. Additionally, it gives you the financal secqurity as you will not face any problem of residence in your difficult times. Owning a home is like an investment you can cash it when needed .But monthly cost of rented apartments is altogather weighs more than owning a home.

In contrast, some people believe that rented apartments are better than owning home. They thought that if a rented apartment is enough for your needs than you donot have to spend mony in building a home rather you can spend it on some kind of buisness, that will give you profit. So people think investing money is better than spending it on buildings.

To conclude, iwould say owning a home is positive situation as it gives you financial secqurity and mental peace where as rented apartments are source of stress beside they are cheaper than owning a home.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: why owning a home is important (financial savings, mental peace, security) and whether this is a positive or negative situation (expressed as positive, with a brief acknowledgment of alternative views). The position is clear throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas tends to be repetitive and limited, particularly in the body paragraphs where points like financial security and mental peace are restated without significant extension. While all parts of the task are addressed, the depth of discussion places this response firmly in Band 5.0, as the ideas are somewhat under-developed and rely on general assertions rather than fully elaborated arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into logical paragraphs with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing some basic organizational structure. However, progression is somewhat hindered by repetitive ideas and mechanical cohesive devices such as 'Firstly,' 'Furthermore,' 'Additionally,' and 'In contrast.' Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in pronoun usage and repetitive sentence starters. Paragraphing is attempted, but the overall logical flow lacks sophisticated transitions, resulting in a somewhat choppy reading experience. These features align closely with the Band 5.0 descriptors, where there is some organization but a lack of clear overall progression and some inadequate or repetitive cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey basic arguments about renting versus owning a home. However, there is a limited range with frequent spelling errors (e.g., 'concidered', 'benifical', 'finance' instead of 'finances', 'secqurity', 'mony', 'buisness') and some awkward word choices ('altogather weighs more'). The student attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'financial security' and 'investment', but spelling and morphological inaccuracies are noticeable and occasionally cause slight strain for the reader, which is characteristic of a Band 5.0 lexical performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures with 'due to the fact that,' 'consequently,' and conditional-style reasoning. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with missing articles ('rented apartment', 'positive situation'), punctuation and capitalization issues (e.g., lowercase 'i' and 'iwould'), and run-on sentences or comma splices ('...cash it when needed .But monthly cost...'). While the meaning is generally communicated, the high frequency of basic grammatical errors and flawed complex structures keeps the score at a Band 5.0 level.
