IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Nowadys, around the world its becoming crucial to rent a home rather than buying. Because some individuals cannot afford to buy their own house.

From my perspective, it's a positive development. People who are living away from their homes or living in abroad for the sake of study or work, they prefer to rented an appartment because its quite easy from them to maintain or change the place and its budget friendly. For instance, students studying in abroad always prefer living in a shared places. so that the rent is divided among all the members living in that place.

On the other hand, if they bought their own flat they have to pay taxes and bills alone. If he wanted to move on it's difficult for them to sale. Many individuals left their own home in order to live near their work place so they prefer to lets the house although they have their own house. For example, some companies provided accomodations to their employers, so employers prefer to live their as they are free of cost.

Subsequently, some times it's has a negative impact, that a person can't buy their own house and after the retirement it's became difficult to manage rent. people who are living with families in other countries should buy their personal home beacuse its cost effective for all family.

In conclusion, renting a house is becoming trend in many countries and has many beneficts for a person living away from their homes. In contrast, it's not benefical for families or older people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response presents a somewhat contradictory position to the prompt, as the prompt asks why owning a home is important, yet the student's introduction immediately pivots to arguing that renting is crucial. Despite this mismatch, the writer attempts to address both parts of the prompt by explaining reasons why renting or owning might be preferred and giving a viewpoint on whether this is positive or negative. The ideas, however, are somewhat under-developed and confused in places. For instance, the statement 'Some individuals cannot afford to buy their own house' directly relates to the prompt, but the arguments wander between the benefits of renting and the necessity of buying for families. Because the ideas lack clear extension and the stance is slightly muddled, this performance aligns closely with Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, which helps give it an overall structure, but the logical progression within and between paragraphs is faulty. Transitions are sometimes abrupt or mechanically deployed, such as 'Subsequently, some times it's has a negative impact'. Referencing is frequently unclear, as pronouns like 'they' and 'he' often shift ambiguously between individuals, companies, and employers (e.g., 'if they bought their own flat they have to pay taxes... If he wanted to move on'). Additionally, cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or repetitive. While the text remains readable, the organizational flaws and mechanical cohesion place this response firmly at Band 5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student displays a limited vocabulary range that is minimally adequate for the task. There are several noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'rented an appartment', 'shared places', 'sale' instead of 'sell', and 'lets the house' instead of 'lease the house'. Spelling errors like 'Nowadys', 'accomodations', and 'beneficts' also appear. While the intended meaning usually gets across, these frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the lexical score from reaching Band 6. The vocabulary is generally basic and repetitive ('prefer', 'live', 'house').

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay contains a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty or punctuated incorrectly. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('it's becoming crucial to rent', 'it's has a negative impact', 'it's became difficult'), fragment sentences ('Because some individuals cannot afford to buy their own house'), and incorrect tense usage. Punctuation errors are also common, such as misplaced periods creating sentence fragments. These frequent errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader, matching the descriptors for Band 5.
