IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The increasing prevalance of building dream home is a difining feature of contemporary society. In few countries, resindents prefer to but own house rather than renting one. This growing tendency towards buying own property warrants closer examination of motivations and circumstances that have contributed to its emergence. In my point of view, I strongly agree this as a positive situation and reason behind this will be discussed below.

To begin with, there are few intensions of people that might be pushing them to own their own house rather than living at leased property. Firstly, the increament in rent every year, which makes the pressure on residents to find new property with low rent. This husstle of keep changing rental homes just to find good place with fair rent is stressful. For instance, people working in cities always keep changing their appartments because of unfair increament in rents and huge amount of bond. Hence, they people try to buy their own appartment and pay that amount as an installments and they live in peace as there is no one asking a bond every year.

Furthermore, there are some advers effeact of buying own house as well. It creates some more challenges for people to pay the whole amount in one go or to Installments and as a result they work harder and overtime just to make their property free from banks. For example, for a middle class person who is working alone in a family takes a risk of buying own house and end up in frustration of paying huge amount to bank for longer years.

In conclusion, there are few advantages of buying own house as it the person do not need to change and live at

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The candidate addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing why homeownership is important and whether it is a positive or negative situation. A clear position is stated in the introduction, agreeing that it is a positive situation. The ideas are relevant, such as avoiding annual rent increases and facing financial pressure from mortgages, but they are sometimes under-developed or repetitive. For instance, the discussion on the drawbacks of buying a home introduces some ideas about financial stress, but the response trails off abruptly at the end, leaving the final paragraph incomplete. This places the task response in the Band 5 to 6 range. Because the ideas are relevant and attempt to cover all parts of the prompt despite the incomplete conclusion, a band score of 5.5 is appropriate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates some organisation with an introduction, body paragraphs, and an attempted conclusion, but there is no clear overall progression due to the incomplete ending. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion', but referencing and linking are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, 'Hence, they people try to buy their own appartment' contains awkward grammatical linking and reference issues. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph is cut off mid-sentence ('as it the person do not need to change and live at'), which disrupts the flow and cohesion of the text. Overall, the structural framework shows basic coherence, aligning with a Band 5.0 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts at less common items such as 'contemporary society', 'prevalance', and 'financial pressure', but it contains noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout. Examples include 'prevalance' instead of 'prevalence', 'difining' instead of 'defining', 'resindents' instead of 'residents', 'but own house' instead of 'buy their own house', 'intensions' instead of 'intentions', 'increament' instead of 'increment', and 'husstle' instead of 'hustle'. These errors occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. However, the student manages to convey the central message, demonstrating a limited but minimally adequate lexical range consistent with a Band 5.0 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors in articles, prepositions, subject-verb agreement, and word forms. Examples include 'building dream home' (missing article), 'In few countries' (incorrect determiner), 'I strongly agree this as a positive' (incorrect verb complementation), 'which makes the pressure' (awkward phrasing), and 'end up in frustration of paying' (missing article and preposition issues). Punctuation and sentence boundaries are also affected in places, such as the dangling sentence structure at the very end of the text. These errors frequently cause difficulty, restricting the grammar score to a Band 5.0.
