IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that owning a house is more important than renting for people living in some countries. This essay will analyze both why this might be the case and if this is negative or positive situation.
First and foremost, owning a house shows stability and a sign of success in life. In some Asian countries you will only get a bride intrested in you if you have a house on your name. The more spacious and beautiful your house is more reputable you are in society. Owning a house has become dream of many young people as they start thinking about it in early stages of adulthood. This dream of owning a house shows how much deep this concept is rooted in the culture so to show one's sucess they have to own a house. This also has become nightmare for some people as they get loans from bank that they have to pay for most of their lives.
As discussed earlier, this has become a very negative situation. Prices of houses has inflated alot and it has reached to an extent that a normal working man cannot afford it if he only reside on his monthly salery. People have to often borrow money to build their houses and most of this is done by parents of the childern who they have to marry. In many Asian countries like Pakistan, Indian etc it is the responsibility of parents to first settle their offsprings in houses and then also share burden of their marriage expenses.
In conclusion owning a house is a virtue that some people donot pay attention to, as most of the other people that donot own a house are vulnerable to.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the reasons why homeownership is prioritized and evaluating whether this situation is positive or negative. The writer presents a clear position throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported, such as mentioning cultural expectations regarding marriage and social status in Asian countries. However, there is a tendency to over-generalize and some supporting points lack depth, such as the brief and slightly unclear conclusion. The explanation of why homeownership is valued is well-integrated with personal and cultural observations, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0. Overall, the task is addressed competently, though further elaboration on the negative economic impacts would strengthen the argument. Therefore, this falls comfortably into Band 6.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing separating the introduction, body points, and conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. For instance, the transition 'As discussed earlier, this has become a very negative situation' relies on repetition rather than sophisticated linking, and referencing is occasionally unclear (e.g., 'most of this is done by parents'). Transitional markers are used, but their management is basic rather than flexible. Paragraphing is present and generally appropriate, but the concluding paragraph is abrupt and fails to effectively summarize the arguments presented in the essay. These features align well with the Band 6 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully conveying meaning with terms like 'stability,' 'reputable,' 'inflation,' and 'vulnerable.' However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'intrested' instead of interested, 'on his name' instead of in his name, 'sucess' instead of success, 'salery' instead of salary, and 'childern' instead of children. Furthermore, collocations are sometimes awkward, such as 'reside on his monthly salary.' While the writer attempts less common vocabulary, the persistent inaccuracies place this performance firmly at Band 5.5, reflecting a mix of adequate task-specific terms and frequent lexical slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional-like ideas. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include missing articles ('shows stability and a sign of success', 'has become dream of many'), subject-verb agreement issues ('Prices of houses has inflated alot'), and awkward preposition usage ('borrow money to build their houses'). Although these errors do not severely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the essay from reaching a Band 6.5. The control over complex structures is inconsistent, leading to a score of 5.5 based on the official criteria.
