IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is true that in many countries owning a home is considered much more crucial rather than renting one.
From my perspective, this is absolutely a positive situation because home ownership can be the one major reason for financial security. In addition, owning a home is a way to obtain the success of stability and we can also pass it to our children though. Therefore, renting a house can make us pay indefinitely and make us feel to the lack of family's stability. Although owning a home is a part of our success in our lives to make us proud. Because for paying rents, we're also worried about our landlords that they can increase the rent or ask us to leave the house which is a major problem in many countries.
In addition, there are many there financial and cultural benefits to have our own home in order to be stressless about our children and we can pass it on to them later. living in our own house feel us free to decorate our home by our own choice and we feel to have a kind of a freedom that we can do whatever we want to. Hence, this home ownership is one of the major goals in everyone's life too. So, owning a house is perfectly a positive thing in my view. Around the world everyone believes to have their own home wherever they are living. Also, there are many reasons to make us self-succeed to own a house in order to be happy and get rid of the anxiety of getting moved to another place.
In conclusion home ownership is highly valued because it represents social status, financial security and long-term stability.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing why home ownership is important and clearly stating the writer's view that this is a positive situation. Ideas such as financial security, stability, freedom of decoration, and passing wealth to children are introduced. However, some of these ideas tend to be repetitive and lack deep extension, moving towards an over-generalisation rather than fully developed arguments. For instance, the discussion on landlords increasing rent is valid, but the points about emotional freedom and psychological relief are stated rather than rigorously analysed. This places the response comfortably at Band 6, as it addresses all parts of the task with relevant ideas, though some are under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement, though cohesion is at times faulty and mechanical. There is an over-reliance on basic additive linkers such as 'In addition' and 'Also', which appear multiple times in close proximity, making the flow somewhat repetitive. Paragraphing is attempted, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but the second body paragraph is quite dense and mixes multiple distinct thoughts without clear transitions. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the phrase 'feel us free' which creates confusion. Overall, the logical progression is evident, but the management of cohesive devices aligns with Band 5.5 to 6.0. Awarding 6.0 reflects adequate overall coherence despite mechanical transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'financial security', 'long-term stability', and 'social status'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors that hinder precision, such as 'obtain the success of stability', 'make us feel to the lack of', and 'living in our own house feel us free'. Additionally, awkward phrasings like 'self-succeed' and 'stressless' indicate limitations in lexical control. These inaccuracies do not entirely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to Band 5.5, rounded to 6.0 given the successful use of some appropriate topic-related vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and concessive clauses ('Although owning a home is a part of our success...'). However, frequent grammatical errors and awkward syntactical patterns appear throughout the text, such as 'owning a home is considered much more crucial rather than renting', 'make us feel to the lack of', and 'we can pass it to our children though'. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are occasionally problematic, resulting in fragments or run-on structures. While communication is rarely completely impeded, the frequency of grammatical slips keeps the performance at a Band 5.5, which rounds to 6.0 based on the presence of varied structures.
