IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 4.5)
In many nations having own have become more significant than renting. It can be due to various reasons. I take it from both positive and negative aspects.
I take it as a good change because the house owner can do anything without thinking he should adjust because he has rented this home to someone and they might take that activities feeling they ar uncomfortable in that house. And some people needs privacy so they don't give their room for rent. I respect everyone's privacy. We can also see the gouse owner might feel diffuculty due to some behaviours from their rented peoples and it might create some violences among them. For instance if that individual came drinking alcohol and always quarrel with his family it makes uncomfortable for the owner.
I also take it as a negative situation because if we have to shift away from our family for any kind of works or continuing our further studies, we have to stay there for long period of time, then we have to rent someone else home. If we don't get the room due to this criteria then we have to be forced to take hostels or we have to spend and work from hotels and it becomes costly.
The government should build some houses in that kind of area for people who are newcomers in that residence which makes them comfortable.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, exploring reasons why homeownership is preferred and discussing both positive and negative aspects. However, the ideas are relatively basic and under-developed, lacking the depth and extension expected for higher bands. Furthermore, the length requirement is NOT met, as the response contains only 231 words, falling short of the 250-word minimum. This results in a penalty to Task Achievement. Phrases such as 'I take it from both positive and negative aspects' reflect a somewhat repetitive and simplistic approach to framing the argument. To improve, the student needs to expand on their arguments with more substantive examples and ensure they meet the minimum word count.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the overall logical progression is weak. Transitions between ideas feel abrupt and mechanical. For instance, the transition from discussing privacy to tenant behavior in the second paragraph ('We can also see the gouse owner might feel diffuculty...') lacks a smooth cohesive bridge. Referencing is also faulty at times, such as 'rented peoples' and 'some houses in that kind of area for people who are newcomers in that residence'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs is disjointed, lacking clear topic sentences and logical development.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently impeded by inaccurate word choices and spelling errors. Examples of weak or incorrect collocation include 'having own have' instead of 'homeownership', 'rented peoples' instead of 'tenants', 'gouse owner', and 'diffuculty'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'privacy' and 'substances', but frequent errors in word formation and spelling constrain the lexical range. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their vocabulary bank and learn correct collocations relating to housing and real estate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical structures are predominantly simple, with frequent errors in sentence construction, tense consistency, and punctuation. Examples of errors include 'some people needs' (subject-verb agreement), 'if that individual came drinking alcohol and always quarrel' (tense inconsistency), and run-on structures like 'if we have to shift away from our family for any kind of works or continuing our further studies, we have to stay there for long period of time, then we have to rent someone else home.' Complex sentences are attempted, but they are frequently faulty and obscure meaning. Punctuation is also sparse, which hinders readability.
