IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In several countries , possessing a home is considered an essential matter instead of renting. This phenomenon can be attributed to several factors, and the implications of this preference are a subject of ongoing debate. Many people view it as a symbol of success and in my opinion it is a very positive trend. The fallowing essay will discuss the significance of owning a house and why people in some countries prioritize owning a home, and evaluate whether this trend has positive or negative implications.
First and foremost, one of the main reasons why people prioritize owning a home is that it symbolizes stability and success. For many people owning a home is not just a financial asset but a sign of achieving a life milestone. Individuals associate house ownership with life long stability as it eliminates the uncertainty of rent hikes or unexpected eviction. In addition, many people view that
Possessing a home is a financial investment. Real estate usually increases in value over time - Buying a property creates a tangible asset and a valuable legacy that can be passed down to future generations. Additionally, owning a home also acts as a source of income. Individuals can rent it and earn extra side income. Furthermore, possessing a home gives access to personal freedom individuals can customize, remodel or modify their living space without asking a landlord for permission.
In contrast, despite having undeniable benefits of owning a home there are a few drawbacks as well. First of all, when individuals spend high amounts on purchasing property, it results in inflation to unsustainable levels. Additionally, individuals who feel pressured to own a house might take on excessive debt which results in financial strain. Furthermore, home ownership reduces job mobility, making it harder for people to move quickly to a new city for work opportunities.
In summary, while owning a home provides individuals with a sense of security and a source of financial investment, it also has certain drawbacks such as it results in long term debt or large mortage loans and reduces job mobility. Overall, home ownership is more a positive trend but it only becomes negative when society forces an individual into harmful financial debt.
