IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Personal house has become an entirely ubiquitous aspect in the society, while other argue that renting is better option. In my opinion, owning a private

residence is more beneficial and it is a positive trend.

Initially, personal accommodation is reliable and more confortable because one can feel free from the burden such as every month rental funds. Moreover, people cannot trust rental properties because of lack of stability. Private house gives us freedom to modify it according to our taste. For example, people in India prefer to live in own house because they think personal houses hold unfogettable memories and privates homes are the symbol of financial proceperity.

In addition, own residence is essential for quality life and better survival. People become more independent by buying own residence. Once money is spent on housing for ownership, then there is no need to worry about rents. People can enjoy life to full by owning the house. Furthermore, individuals can live peascefully with their loved one's and create unforgettable memories. To enhance the standards of the life one should become responsible and own the house with continous hardwork and smartwork because own house vibes differently.

In conclusion, I believe that we need to burn mid night oil to achieve success and in oder to earn more money so that we can buy our own accommodation. Personal house is crucial for gratification and independance. concequently, people should buy their own home in order to mitigate the consequences such as lack of resources and quality life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by explaining why home ownership is important and clearly stating a position that this is a positive situation. Your ideas, such as financial security, freedom of modification, and emotional stability, are relevant. However, the development of these ideas tends to be repetitive rather than thoroughly extended. For instance, mentioning unforgettable memories and family bonding appears multiple times without adding new argumentative depth. To reach a higher band score, you should ensure that each body paragraph introduces distinct, fully expanded points rather than circling back to similar concepts. Nonetheless, a clear position is maintained throughout, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay presents a logical overall arrangement with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs supporting the main stance, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct thoughts. However, cohesion within and between sentences is occasionally mechanical or faulty. For example, transition phrases like 'Initially' and 'In addition' are used, but referencing can be unclear, such as 'own house vibes differently,' which disrupts the natural flow. Additionally, pronoun referencing is sometimes imprecise, making the logical progression between sentences feel slightly disjointed at times. These features align with the Band 6 descriptor where cohesion is sometimes mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your lexical range is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your main points successfully. You make attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'ubiquitous,' 'proceperity' (prosperity), and 'gratification.' However, there are notable spelling errors ('concfourtable,' 'unfogettable,' 'peascefully,' 'concequently') and word-form inaccuracies ('Personal house' instead of 'Owning a home,' 'own residence' instead of 'home ownership'). These errors in word choice and spelling occasionally detract from the reading experience, placing the response firmly at Band 5.5 due to these recurring lexical slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as 'In my opinion, owning a private residence is more beneficial and it is a positive trend.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('in society,' 'for quality life,' 'to full'), incorrect prepositions, and awkward phrasing ('own house vibes differently'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the essay from achieving a Band 6.0. The control over basic grammar needs strengthening to reduce the density of errors.
