IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In some nations owns her house is crucial than renting a property for individuals, I believed that in several countries houses rents are so high touching to sky, therefore owns her house is best habit rather than pay a huge rents.

Majority of countries in world wide faces houses crisis from the several years ago, therefore rents of houses are higher even mostly people sleep on road side. I think that might be in several Europein countries rents are more than 5000 pounds a house, so if the people buying a house and pay installments it's superior for her future. For instance, England has been facing land crisis, nevertheless in cities rents touching to sky. Furthermore, If individuals purchased a house living in one bedroom and he should claim the rent of other rooms, he can also easily paid his installments.

Renting property is also crucial, many of people indulged as a business. Although the local individuals can not have a ability to paying rents. Recently. I saw a video a person saves some and than purchased a house some area given to students, he might be easily pay for house. Approximately, 14 millions people in our nations have living in appartments, even sometimes they were not able to pay for it. Therefore, renting property is not crucial for every one, some eople have enough amount for this.

From my perspective, own a house is better than rents because it is wasting of money, additionally if they should purchased a house and than pay installments rather than rents it's significant for future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, explaining why homeownership is valued (financial security, avoiding high rents) and giving an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The writer attempts to develop ideas regarding housing crises and renting strategies, as seen in points about renting out spare rooms or generating income. However, the development lacks depth and clarity in places, with some ideas feeling repetitive or partially obscure due to expression, such as the mixed discussion on renting out property as a business. The position is generally clear throughout, though the reasoning tends to be somewhat over-generalised and loosely supported. Overall, the response fulfills the basic requirements of the task prompt, earning a Band 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays some overall organization into paragraphs, attempting to group ideas such as housing crises and personal financial strategies. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and logical transitions between ideas are often missing or awkward. Cohesive devices are used inconsistently and sometimes inaccurately, as seen in transitions like 'therefore owns her house is best habit' and 'Furthermore, If individuals...'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal paragraph cohesion is weak, resulting in sentences that feel disjointed. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as shifting pronouns confusingly between third-person singular and plural. These organizational limitations place this criterion firmly at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively limited and repetitive, with frequent word-choice and collocation errors. Examples include phrases like 'owns her house', 'houses rents are so high touching to sky', and 'houses crisis'. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary, inaccuracies are noticeable throughout the text, such as 'european countries' spelled as 'Europein' and 'appartments'. These lexical shortcomings occasionally cause difficulty for the reader and obscure precise meaning. Although the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic concepts related to housing and renting, the density of errors keeps the lexical score at a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex ones. Frequent grammatical errors occur in almost every sentence, including subject-verb agreement issues ('majority of countries... faces'), tense inconsistencies, and incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'he should claim', 'is wasting of money'). Punctuation is also problematic, with comma splices frequently joining independent clauses incorrectly. These errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and occasionally obscure meaning, which aligns closely with the Band 5 descriptors for grammatical range and accuracy.
