IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In the contemporary era, people like to live in their personal special place so people bought their personal house. On that note, in numerous nations having own house rather than renting one is very significant for individuals. This will not only discuss why this case but also tell this is positive or negative situation.

To begin with, due to rapid technolization and innovation in technolgies people prefer to live in a urban because of good education and transport facilities and also in urban area has higher price value to bought own house so people need to inverst huge amount of money for buying their own house, so people just renting a flat or small house which is beneficial and also save money which will beneficial in future. Moreover, people choose renting house because they get all eminities as well as good interior and stadard quality of house which looks like luxroriuse and in todays era people just like show off therefore they just live in renting home.

In my opinion this trend have negative situation. Firstly, due to rapid urbanization most of the people like to live in urban area and their land price of urban area is increasing day by day so if people do not buy home now then it is difficult to buy in future because of heavy price range. Furthermore, live in renting house is sometime difficult because people have to shift after each and every year according to the rule of government so they do not gain good relation with their neighbour.

To conclude, why people like to live in rented house because it is convenience and people get good aminities and this trend have negative situation because of instablility in living at own place and higher price in future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing why homeownership is important and giving an opinion on whether this trend is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is limited and somewhat repetitive. For instance, the discussion on urbanization in the second and third paragraphs covers similar ground without deeply extending the arguments. The writer's position is discernible, but the overall task fulfilment suffers from underdeveloped reasoning and vague generalisations, such as claiming people rent merely for 'show off'. This places the response comfortably at Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into four paragraphs, showing some structural organisation with introductory and concluding remarks, as well as basic cohesive devices like 'To begin with' and 'Moreover'. However, overall progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and weak logical links between sentences. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the mechanical repetition of sentence starters creates a choppy flow. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is frequently faulty, resulting in a Band 5.0 performance.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The student uses a limited range of vocabulary with noticeable errors that occasionally impede understanding. Words like 'technolization', 'eminities', and 'luxroriuse' display severe spelling and word-formation issues. Collocations are often unnatural, such as 'price value' instead of 'property value' or 'heavy price range' instead of 'high prices'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic concepts, the frequency of lexical errors prevents the score from rising above Band 4.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and run-on clauses joined by coordinating conjunctions. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, such as in the opening sentence: 'people like to live in their personal special place so people bought their personal house.' Punctuation is weak, with comma splices occurring throughout the text. Frequent errors in verb tense, agreement, and article usage cause difficulty for the reader, aligning with the Band 4.5 descriptors.
