IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Owning a seperate home is huge blessing for peoples. it gives the strenght in lifestyle and people lives his life without any rent pressure while some people did not afford the own home due to the fact of financial condition but in some countries people considerd renting the home is more benificial than owning the home.

Firstly, from my perspective if a person were not stabled ecnomically and he try hard to save money for a year furthermore he applied for a bank loan for his owm home this stretegy leads him toward an unneccessary doubt thats makes very difficult to clear the loan in future. I thought renting a home is poisitive and reliable condition for those who did not afford anormous amount of money. Simply, they just earn money and pay his rent these things prevent him to extra pressure.

In additiion, renting a home have some negative situation as well as like if a person rent a home from the owner and they did not made any contract about the duration of stay this situation even worse if the owner of a home suddenly said you need to find other home and leave my home due to the fact they were not made any contract like that. Renting a home has another drawback you did not organized your home according to his own choice.

To sum up, renting a home is gage of sword we avail some benifits and discomfort also. But owning a home gives you more strenght and power you looks more confident and independent and made decision by his own.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing why homeownership is important and giving an opinion on whether this trend is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and lacks depth. For example, the explanation regarding bank loans and financial stress is brief and relies on general assertions rather than fully extended arguments. The position is clear throughout, but the reasoning tends to generalise without exploring broader economic or cultural contexts. According to the Band 6 descriptors, all parts of the task are addressed, but some ideas are under-developed or unclear, which corresponds to this level of performance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is attempted, though the division of ideas could be sharper. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'In additiion', and 'To sum up', but referencing is occasionally faulty or mechanical, as seen in phrases like 'these things prevent him to extra pressure'. Furthermore, pronoun agreement is sometimes unclear, making the flow of ideas slightly disjointed in places. This aligns well with the Band 5.0 to 6.0 range, where organisation is present, but cohesion is sometimes faulty or repetitive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, but range and precision are limited. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'enormous amount' and 'financial condition', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'seperate', 'peoples', 'strenght', 'benificial', 'stabled', 'ecnomically', 'stretegy', 'poisitive', 'anormous', 'additiion', and 'gage of sword'. These errors occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. The use of repetitive phrasing like 'renting a home' further restricts the lexical range, placing the response firmly at Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are frequent errors in verb tense, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'people lives his life', 'people did not afford', 'a person were not stabled', 'makes very difficult', and 'you did not organized'. Punctuation is also problematic, notably with run-on sentences and missing commas separating clauses. While the meaning is generally retrievable despite the frequent errors, the high frequency of basic mistakes prevents the response from achieving a higher band.
