Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, attempting to explain why homeownership is preferred in some countries and giving a neutral perspective on whether this is positive or negative. However, the ideas are presented in a very confused and repetitive manner. For instance, the writer claims that buying a home is more affordable than renting in cities like London and Sydney, providing a flawed mathematical comparison (£10,000 rent versus a £20,000 average home price) which demonstrates a lack of realistic task development. The position shifts between arguing for the affordability of buying and acknowledging that buying can be very expensive. Because the reasoning is underdeveloped and hard to follow, it aligns closely with the Band 5 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The text suffers from severe organizational flaws. The entire response consists of a single, massive run-on sentence without any paragraph breaks or proper punctuation. There is a complete lack of paragraphing to structure the introduction, body arguments, and conclusion. While basic cohesive devices and conjunctions like 'because', 'and', and 'if' are used, they are heavily overused to stitch together disjointed clauses, resulting in no clear overall progression of ideas. Referencing and logical sequencing break down frequently, making the text extremely difficult to navigate for the reader. This performance falls firmly within the Band 4 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with numerous severe spelling errors that impede communication. Examples include 'heared' for heard, 'ios' for is, 'tghimg' for think, 'buyimng' for buying, 'copuntries' for countries, 'londoin' for london, 'acc' for and, 'alidfornia' for california, 'mebourne' for melbourne, 'acaptials' for capital, 'cotioes' for cities, 'ratehr' for rather, 'ebecasue' for because, 'thsi' for this, 'seanrio' for scenario, 'iption' for option, 'tio' for to, 'mortage' for mortgage, 'vies' for view, 'nowt' for not, 'postive' for positive, 'neytral' for neutral, 'prpert' for property, 'hjelp' for help, 'housr' for house, 'libing' for living, 'orgze' for or, 'ayig' for paying, 'hown' for own, 'ibn' for in, and 'ho,e' for home. The range is limited and the high frequency of spelling and word-choice errors places this at Band 4.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, characterized by a lack of proper sentence boundaries, capitalization, and punctuation. The entire essay is an unbroken chain of clauses linked by coordinating conjunctions, failing to demonstrate control over complex sentence structures. There are persistent errors in basic grammatical structures, subject-verb agreement, and tense consistency, such as 'you a multip;es prpert you can rent it out' and 'while you a er payig a rent you ahve to opay'. These errors frequently cause strain and difficulty for the reader, matching the Band 4 descriptors.
