IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
These days, mostly people prefer to owning home as compare to live in a rental houses. For many people, owing their own home is very essential for better life style. In my perspective, I completely agree that significance of owning home is higher than living in rented homes, to lively independently and peacefully. This eassy will explain the reasons behind my viewpoint.
The main reason why I support this trend is that families have freedom to live independently without depending on houseowner. By this I mean that, a person have freedom to do several changes in his house according to his own taste without any interference. For instance, people mostly like to alter color of their walls and if they can do it freely if they own a house. Therefore in my countries it is become essential for people to buy their own homes.
Another compelling reason for my opinion is that they people can enjoy a peaceful life without burdening themselves with the overcharges of rented homes. For example, in America rented homes are extremely expensive so in this type of cases owing a home is best solution.
Admittedly, there are drawbacks like a person get restricted to particular area after buying his own home even if he is not interested in that colony anymore. So in my perspective it is the most negative consequences that a person have to face after buying his own home.
To sum up, while in my countries owing their own home is very important as compare to living in rental houses. But, I strongly believe that owing home is more beneficial in terms of independence and comfortable life style.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: why home ownership is important and whether this is a positive or negative situation. The writer adopts a clear position, stating that owning a home is superior to renting due to independence and peace of mind. Main ideas are introduced, such as freedom from landlords and avoiding high rental costs, though they tend to be somewhat generalised and repetitive rather than fully extended. A counter-argument regarding being restricted to a particular area is also briefly explored, fulfilling the requirement to discuss the negative aspects. Overall, the ideas are relevant to the task, aligning with the Band 6 descriptor where all parts are addressed, though some ideas remain slightly under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a generally coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, separating the introduction, reasons, counter-argument, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'The main reason why', 'Another compelling reason', and 'Admittedly', but their application is sometimes mechanical or imprecise (e.g., 'In my perspective', 'to lively independently'). Referencing is mostly clear, though logical progression falters slightly in the concluding paragraph where the distinction between the reasons and the writer's stance becomes slightly blurred. This demonstrates the characteristics of Band 6, where cohesion is sometimes faulty and mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting some less common collocations and phrases such as 'compelling reason', 'burdening themselves', and 'interference'. However, there are notable word choice errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, such as 'mostly people prefer to owning home as compare to live', 'houseowner' instead of landlord, and 'overcharges of rented homes'. Additionally, spelling and morphological errors like 'eassy' and 'lively' instead of live occur. These errors do not seriously impede communication, fitting the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range well; therefore, a score of 6.0 reflects an adequate range with noticeable inaccuracies.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures (e.g., 'if they can do it freely if they own a house'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in verb forms, prepositions, and articles. Examples include 'mostly people prefer to owning home', 'a person have freedom', 'in my countries', and 'a person get restricted'. Punctuation is also occasionally neglected, such as missing spaces after periods. Because these errors persist throughout and affect the fluency of complex sentences, the performance sits firmly at Band 5.0.
