IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Whenever someone is asked whether they want to own a house or live their life in a rented property? The most common response would be to own one. Most people around the world prefer owning a house because having your own place has more advantages. I strongly agree with the statement and the reasoning will be discussed in detail in the ensuing paragraphs.

Firstly, when a person owns a house they are the sole decision maker, they have the authority to remodel, reconstruct or change the layout of the whole house without asking for permission from anyone. For instance, if someone buys a house and wants to create a porch in the backyard, they are not obliged to ask anyone for permission. Therefore, owning a house is far better as you can live freely in hour own space that you have created for yourself.

Secondly, ownership also gives you the right to integrate easily into the surrounding neighbourhood making it easier to become a part of that society. For example, a person moving from Australia to the UK will have a much easier chance of integrating into the society if they own a property their, as compared to a person only renting for a certain period of time.

In contrast, some individuals believe that, in the current economic situation, it is better to rent a place then to own one because the former is cheaper then the later. Also, renting is beneficial for the leasor of the property as they are able to generate income and pay taxes to the economy, helping the economic development of that country. For example, the UK governemnt has housing societies made specifically for immagrants who arrives in the UK and wants a rental home at cheap prices. These rental homes acts as an asset for the UK government and generate income on monthly basis.

In conclusion, people prefer having their own house as compared to a rental because they are able to feel much safer within their own space and it allows easier integartion into the society. On the other hand, a few individuals prefer rental as they are advantageous for people who does not have enough money to afford buying a house and it is also beneficial to the government in the long-run. So, it is safe to say owning a house has its own perks and benefits and it should be made easier for people to own their own property for sake their security and for the future of their family.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by explaining why homeownership is important and discussing whether this is a positive or negative situation. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The reasons provided, such as autonomy over remodeling and easier neighborhood integration, are relevant and extended. However, the counter-argument introduces some confusion by mixing up the benefits of renting for individuals with its benefits for the government and economy (e.g. stating 'renting is beneficial for the leasor... to generate income and pay taxes', which confuses landlords with the broader societal perspective). Despite this minor confusion, the ideas are sufficiently developed to satisfy the requirements for a Band 6.5 or solid 6.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is generally coherent with a clear overall arrangement and logical progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to signal transitions, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'In contrast', and 'In conclusion'. However, there are some mechanical or awkward transitions and referencing issues, such as the fragment sentence at the very beginning ('Whenever someone is asked... ?') and minor cohesion slips in linking sentences. Overall, the structure is easy to follow, supporting a clear Band 6.5 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'remodel', 'reconstruct', 'integrate', and 'obliged'. However, there are notable spelling errors (e.g., 'there' instead of 'their', 'governemnt', 'immagrants', 'arrives', 'acts', 'integartion') and lexical inaccuracies (e.g., confusing 'leasor' with 'lessor' or tenant, or phrasing 'for sake their security'). These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses (e.g., 'a person moving from Australia to the UK will have a much easier chance...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, including punctuation errors like the question mark after an introductory dependent clause ('...property?'), subject-verb agreement issues ('immagrants who arrives'), and tense or word form slips ('does not have enough money to afford buying'). While these errors occur regularly, they rarely impede overall communication, placing the essay comfortably in the Band 6.0 category.
