Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing why homeownership is important and evaluating whether this is positive or negative. A position is presented, though the evaluation of the situation tends to be repetitive and over-generalized, particularly regarding economic impacts. Ideas such as financial savings and safety are introduced, but they lack full development with specific, realistic evidence. For instance, the claim that 'significant number of investor in property are international employee or students' lacks accurate support. While the prompt is adequately addressed to achieve a Band 5.0 or 6.0, the under-development of supporting ideas and the slight confusion between reasons and impacts keep the score at Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays some organization with a basic introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, attempting an overall progression. However, cohesive devices are often mechanical, inaccurate, or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'To commence' and 'Another positive impact'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and paragraphing is visible but basic, with the body paragraphs blending reasons and positive impacts interchangeably. Additionally, transitional phrases are sometimes awkward or missing, creating a somewhat disjointed flow for the reader. These features align closely with the Band 5.0 descriptors, as there is no clear overall progression and cohesion is frequently faulty.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'financial problem', 'save money', and 'economy'. However, there are numerous noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'seious' for serious, 'owing' for owning, 'benefical' for beneficial, 'oversease' for overseas, and 'ecomony' for economy. These errors and inappropriate word formations (e.g., 'peopel priorities to buy') cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited lexical control, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptors well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with occasional attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty, such as 'While people move to another country for work or study they find a safe place first of all' and 'If people buy houses or other property to live in that country it will enhance the ecomony'. Frequent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Rent of every month become'), articles, and punctuation persist throughout the response, which can cause difficulty for the reader and fit the Band 5.0 criteria.
