IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

I strongly believe that owning a home is a positive situation for some countries except those countries which are fighting with over-population problems.

However, in some countries a lot of people like to own their own home as they want to secure a good future for themselfs and even for their childrens. It also effect the ecnomic growth in a good way of that country as they have more people to pay for more taxes. In this way both parties have benefits like those people who own a home do not hav to worry about the land lord or how to arrange the rent every month and it also become a part of their assets which they can sell later in need.

There might be an other cases that why its importent for some people in few countries to own a home because it might be related to their personal life or they do not get along with other people. These people like to decorate their home according to their will because you can not change the rentng home according to you. Even this group of individuals love to own a home becaue it might be their dream home.

Well, in my opinion those countries where over-population is not a problem and their are people who wants to have their own home or it's importent for them to own a home is a positive sitution because it has benifits for both parties the person and the country but its oposite for the countries facing over-populaion problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing reasons why homeownership is important and whether it is a positive or negative situation. However, the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the mention of economic growth and taxation ('It also effect the ecnomic growth in a good way') is stated briefly without elaboration or clear support. The writer's position is somewhat discernible from the introduction and conclusion, but the reasoning fluctuates, particularly in the broad generalizations made about overpopulation. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to extend their ideas fully, providing clear explanations and relevant examples for each point raised, rather than relying on brief assertions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic organization with discernible paragraphs attempting to cover different aspects of the prompt. However, the text lacks an overall logical progression, and the transitions between sentences and ideas feel disjointed. Cohesive devices are used rather mechanically or inaccurately, such as the sudden shift initiated by 'Well, in my opinion' in the final paragraph. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, which disrupts the flow of the argument. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal paragraph cohesion needs to be significantly strengthened to ensure a smoother, more logical development of ideas throughout the essay.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'over-population' and 'assets', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling, such as 'ecnomic' instead of economic, 'importent', and 'benifits'. Spelling errors and awkward word forms appear frequently enough to occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the student should expand their lexical range and pay closer attention to correct word formation and spelling to ensure greater precision and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simpler sentence patterns alongside faulty attempts at complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'there are people who wants', pluralization errors such as 'their childrens' and 'other cases', and incorrect prepositional usage or missing articles. For example, phrases like 'they do not hav to worry about the land lord' and 'change the rentng home' contain structural and morphological flaws. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and indicate a need for much stronger control over basic and complex grammatical forms.
