IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

in some countries like korea their is an obligation to buy a house to be eligible to marry while some other countries people think same and people buy houses why people buy houses is because this gives a sense of positivity to the person that buys the house so that his family wife kids future is abit secured if someone has their own home even if you go through a rough patch with money shortage you have your own home for renting that is not the case if you are short on money and you can not pay your rent you will obviously be thrown out because you are a tenent and not the owner if you can not pay the owner you can not stay in the house so their is a constant fear about that therefore in many countries people go after buying house of their own rather than renting one one of the most important factor related to this is that a house becomes a place of memory a young couple buys a house they have their children in that house those children grow up in that house they have birthdays parties etc in that house the place becomes a stronghold for memories that is not the case in renting homes because various factors affect the people in renting for example electricity bills gas bills or other inflation causes make the renters increase the rent on average monthly basis and their is other factor that after half and year or one year the rent is increased so the family living in the house has one other problem other than paying bills and making their ends meet this type of situation can mostly be avoided if a person has their own home they dont have to worry about the rent so they can focus on the other things for me this is mostly a positive solution because if a person has their own home their family is secured even if their bread winner in the house has some accident or even if he dies they have a home where they can live and keep surviving but for renting a home that is not the case a home gives a sense of security a place for memories and person owning a home has one less thing to worry about for the future i think this is a positive solution

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing why homeownership is important, such as security and emotional value, and provides a clear position that this is a positive development. However, some ideas are under-developed or repetitive. For instance, the point about cultural pressures in Korea is introduced at the very beginning ('in some countries like korea their is an obligation to buy a house') but is never expanded upon. Similarly, the discussion on financial stability and memories is somewhat generalized and circles back to similar points without deep exploration. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to fully develop every idea introduced rather than leaving points partially touched upon.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response suffers significantly from a lack of proper paragraphing, as it is written as one enormous, continuous block of text without a single paragraph break. This makes it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are either missing or overly repetitive, relying on simple connectors like 'and' or 'for example' rather than a varied range of linking words. Referencing is also faulty at times, making it unclear what certain pronouns point back to. Introducing logical paragraph breaks—separating the introduction, reasons for buying, emotional value, and the conclusion—would drastically improve the overall structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary to communicate basic ideas about housing, renting, and financial security, attempting some less common phrases like 'rough patch', 'bread winner', and 'stronghold for memories'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and spelling throughout the text, such as using 'tenent' instead of 'tenant', 'half and year' instead of 'half a year', and confusing 'abit' with 'a bit'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they reflect a limited control over spelling and precise lexical choices, keeping the vocabulary score at a moderate level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of structures, consisting mostly of lengthy, run-on sentences joined by conjunctions rather than controlled complex forms. There is a frequent lack of punctuation, particularly the total absence of capital letters and full stops, which makes the entire text read as one unending sentence. Other errors include subject-verb agreement issues like 'their is an obligation' and 'inflation causes make', alongside missing articles. These errors and the lack of proper punctuation cause frequent difficulty for the reader and restrict the grammatical score.
