IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 4.5)
In some countries people believe that owning a home is more crucial than renting one. This is because home can provide financial securtity and will become an assets for future use. In my opinion, this is postive situation because it can benefit people in the long term.
There might be several reasons for owning a home rather than a renting one and the first reason is owning a home will provide freedom to decorate home and some people might feel uneasy to live in reting place and they might also want to go out on their particular time. Sometimes the owner are strict to their rules and regulations aswell many owners willnot provide proper facilities in the home. For instance, in kathmandu many people are likely to live the rented place because of strict rules and not getting proper facilities. The another reason might be they want to have financial security for future and owning house will be their longterm assets, they might use their as a tool to get some loans for their future children as well. \

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt minimally, identifying reasons for owning a home and stating a position that it is a positive situation. However, the ideas remain heavily under-developed, with brief explanations like providing freedom or financial security that lack proper extension or detailed support. Crucially, the writing falls significantly short of the word count requirement, reaching only 187 words instead of the minimum 250 words, which restricts the depth of task fulfilment. To move to a higher band, the writer would need to fully develop both parts of the prompt with expanded arguments, specific examples, and sufficient overall length.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The text demonstrates some basic organisation, opening with an introduction and attempting body paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used very mechanically or are noticeably inadequate, as seen in repetitive phrasings and abrupt transitions like starting sentences with 'and the first reason is' or 'The another reason might be'. Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, and the text breaks off prematurely mid-sentence at the end. Paragraphing is attempted, but the structure is incomplete. To improve cohesion, the writer must ensure logical sequencing from sentence to sentence, employ a wider and more accurate range of connecting words, and complete the overall essay structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common terms and topic-specific vocabulary such as 'financial security' and 'longterm assets', but there are noticeable errors in spelling, word form, and word choice that cause some difficulty for the reader, including 'securtity', 'postive', 'reting', 'willnot', and 'longterm'. The phrase 'go out on their particular time' is also unnatural. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to expand their lexical range, demonstrate better precision in word choice and collocations, and eliminate basic spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammar is characterised by a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple or faulty complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the response, such as article omissions ('live the rented place'), incorrect pluralisation or agreement ('Sometimes the owner are strict', 'owning house'), and awkward prepositional usage. These frequent errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer should practice forming accurate complex sentence structures, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and articles, and carefully proofread for basic grammatical accuracy.
