Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 2.5
The response is heavily off-topic, as the student has written a Task 1 report describing a bar chart about coffee and tea purchasing habits in various cities, whereas the actual prompt is a Task 2 essay about home ownership versus renting. Additionally, the length requirement has not been met, as the response contains only 198 words, falling well short of the 250-word minimum. Because the writing addresses a completely different task type and is significantly under-length, it earns a very low evaluation for task achievement. To improve, the writer must carefully read the prompt instructions, ensure they write the correct essay type, and fully develop their ideas to meet the required word count.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response shows some basic organisation with an attempt at an introduction and body paragraphs, as seen in 'Overall, the visual data depicts...' and 'In addition, Hobart shows...'. However, there is no clear overall progression appropriate for an essay, and the paragraphing is confused by the completely wrong task genre. Cohesive devices are repetitive and sometimes mechanical, such as the frequent use of 'and' to link disparate clauses. Referencing is also unclear in places, making it difficult to follow the logical flow of ideas. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to structure their essay logically with clear topic sentences and smoother, more varied cohesive relationships between paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for basic description, featuring words like 'outcome', 'survey', and 'percentage level'. There are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'individual visit to cafe for tea or coffee is accounted for' and 'purchase fresh and instant coffee is 54% or 38% more than one decade'. These errors sometimes cause difficulty for the reader. To improve lexical resource, the student should expand their range of vocabulary, practise correct collocations related to data trends and comparisons, and work on precise word forms to ensure clearer communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammar demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors when attempting more complex formations. There are noticeable mistakes in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'person buy fresh coffee in last one month are same' and 'purchase in last 4 weeks show the similar growth'. Punctuation is also erratic, with unusual symbols used instead of standard percentages in places like '45 •/•'. These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer must focus on basic grammatical accuracy, ensuring correct subject-verb agreement and expanding their repertoire of complex sentence structures safely.
