IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In the 21st century , peoples like to live more luxurious life than living the simple life. So, in many countries people are now renting home rather than buying a house and it had became a trend in all around the world. I think this things had both positive and negative situation.
People are renting house more in these days because they didnot like to stay in one place for longer time, because they easily get bored with the place within a certain month or a period and they like to travel alot. So, i think this is one of the main reason of renting houses than buying one.
Nowdays, people do not like to stay in one job or one environment like in the past, and people started choosing their life in a more fun ways and they want to travel all the world , so they do not want to bound in a certain house for rest of their life and this is the reason why people are renting houses than buying one .
Many people do not realise earlier about the situaton they are enjoying without buying a house and enjoying their life travelling and renting. But after some years, they might need to stick to one job which they have to do for thier rest of lives and then, they realized they have to support thier family and look after them. Due to of more fun that people wanted in their younger time had cost their family memeber to suffer when their is no saving and they do not have a house for their family members to live.
So, in conclusion, i think this trend has impacted most of the family memebers life, while it is fun to do when you are younger and when you do not have any responsibilities to take.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt only partially, showing some confusion regarding the premise of the task. While the prompt asks why owning a home is important in some countries and whether this is positive or negative, the student's text actually focuses on why people rent rather than buy. This misinterpretation restricts the development of the ideas. The position is not always clearly sustained throughout, and the ideas presented regarding lifestyle preferences and future consequences remain somewhat limited and under-developed. To improve towards higher bands, the writer must carefully read the prompt to ensure the central topic—homeownership versus renting—is accurately addressed, and ensure that both parts of the question are explored with fully extended and supported arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some basic organisation with paragraph breaks used to separate different points, but the text lacks a clear overall progression. The movement between ideas feels disjointed, and the response relies heavily on repetitive phrasing and basic conjunctions like 'and' and 'so' rather than a flexible range of cohesive devices. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as when pronouns are used without a precise antecedent. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to ensure logical sequencing between paragraphs, employ a wider variety of cohesive markers naturally, and ensure that each paragraph builds smoothly upon the previous one to guide the reader clearly through the argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer relies on basic and repetitive lexical items throughout the essay, such as 'fun', 'life', 'place', and 'house'. There are noticeable lexical errors, including word form mistakes like 'peoples' instead of 'people', 'situaton', 'memeber', and collocation or phrasing slips such as 'luxurious life than living the simple life' and 'bound in a certain house'. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader at times. To move up to the next band, the writer should expand their lexical repertoire by incorporating less common vocabulary, improving word choice precision, and paying closer attention to spelling and standard word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is limited, consisting mostly of repetitive, over-extended simple or basic complex structures that frequently contain errors. There are frequent mistakes in verb tenses, such as 'it had became a trend', 'they didnot like', and 'they realized', alongside issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage. Attempts at more complex sentence forms often result in faulty structures and punctuation errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. To reach a higher standard, the writer must work on improving control over basic grammatical patterns, varying sentence structures accurately, and eliminating frequent errors in verb forms, plurals, and prepositions within grammatical structures.
