IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Home is something that require safety and security so in my opinion i prefer owing home rather then renting in contrast depend on people financial assestment if someone has the abilty having home people should choose owing home rather then renting
owing home gives people socail value and long term security while renting home can be a challanges and pressure where you have provide money but in return you cannot get any authority of that property this eassay will give us clear disscussion of importance owing home
The primary catalysts behind the preference for buying property are long-term economic stability and psychological security. Financially, real estate functions as a forced savings mechanism; unlike monthly rent, which is an unrecoverable expenditure, mortgage repayments gradually build equity in a tangible asset. Over time, property appreciation allows individuals to accumulate generational wealth, providing a crucial safety net for retirement. Psychologically, ownership grants absolute security of tenure. Homeowners are immune to arbitrary evictions, sudden rental hikes, or the restrictive rules imposed by landlords, allowing them to establish deep, permanent roots within a community.
However, when a society elevates homeownership from a personal choice to a cultural necessity, the consequences are overwhelmingly negative. Economically, a hyper-focused housing market ties up a massive proportion of a citizen’s net worth in a single, highly illiquid asset. This leaves households incredibly vulnerable to macroeconomic shocks and property market crashes. Furthermore, an obsession with buying drives real estate prices to artificial heights. This creates a severe generational divide, where younger or lower-income individuals are locked out of the market entirely, widening the wealth gap and fostering social resentment. Lastly, high ownership rates reduce labor mobility, as workers are less willing or able to relocate quickly for better career opportunities due to the friction of selling a home.
In conclusion, while the impulse to own property is entirely rational from an individual standpoint of security and wealth generation, a societal obsession with homeownership is ultimately detrimental. It inflates housing markets, restricts workforce flexibility, and marginalizes vulnerable populations. To mitigate this, governments must invest in robust, well-regulated rental sectors so that financial stability is no longer exclusively contingent on holding a mortgage.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by explaining why homeownership is important and discussing whether this trend is positive or negative. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The reasons behind the preference for buying, such as long-term economic stability and psychological security, are extended and well-supported, particularly in the third paragraph. However, the introductory paragraph shows a tendency to over-generalise and lacks the clarity and development seen later in the text, indicating the features of a solid response with elements extending beyond standard expectations. The ideas presented are generally relevant and fully engage with the prompt's core themes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas from the introduction through to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the causes of homeownership from its broader societal impacts. However, cohesion at the sentence level is sometimes mechanical or features faulty transitions, particularly in the opening section where sentences run together without adequate punctuation or referencing. Cohesive devices are present, but their usage lacks the smooth flexibility found at higher bands. The logical flow is sometimes disrupted by phrasing that does not seamlessly connect clauses, resulting in occasional lapses in cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating a sufficient range to discuss complex economic and social issues with some precision. The writer successfully attempts less common lexical items, such as 'generational wealth', 'forced savings mechanism', 'illiquid asset', and 'macroeconomic shocks', showing an awareness of style and collocation. However, there are some noticeable word choice and spelling errors, particularly in the opening paragraph with terms like 'owing home' instead of 'owning a home' and 'assestment', which do not impede overall communication. These occasional inaccuracies prevent the vocabulary from achieving higher-level fluency.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating structures such as conditional clauses and participial phrases effectively in the later paragraphs. There are, however, persistent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly in the opening sentences where missing articles, incorrect verb forms ('require' instead of 'requires'), and run-on structures occur. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication. The writer shows good control of punctuation and complex structures as the essay progresses, but the presence of basic grammatical slips throughout keeps the grammar profile consistent with a mixed level of accuracy.
