IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The importance of owning a home in another country rather than renting it which was always debatable has now become more controversial with many people claiming it is beneficial while others reject this notion. The substantial influence of this trend has sparked the controversy over the potential impact in recent years. In my opinion, the proposition appears to be much more rational.
Analyzing the statement and explaining further, the first and foremost reason behind this is inflation which causes rising rates of renting a house, and the cost of property too which rises significantly over a timespan of few years. This reason also accounts that due the rise in prices people think that buying a house is the most safest and profitable investment in the modern times, not only you can gain benefit by selling it again, it could be much more profitable if you buy it and then rent it.
Based on the aforementioned reasons, I think it is a strongly positive situation as buying a house saves a lot of costs since renting a house or even an apartment is getting really costly due to the peak of inflation seen in the recent years. Apart from this, Fraud rates are high in many countries and people get scammed specifically when renting an apartment as false documents are signed by the renter due to which it is highly encouraged to have a privately owned apartment if you have enough finances available.
Finally, I can conclude that people should prefer to by a house than rent it due to the above mentioned reasons, if finances allow as it is not only cost saving, for the long term it is highly profitable too. Houses bought today can be sold of much more higher amount after a few years, plus you won't have to rely on anyone else everytime nor pay rents and it could be adjusted and managed according to how you like it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing why owning a home is important and giving an opinion on whether this trend is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is uneven. For instance, the first paragraph introduces a slightly confusing premise about owning a home in 'another country' rather than your own. The reasons provided, such as inflation and avoiding rental fraud, are relevant, but the elaboration tends to be repetitive and relies on generalisations rather than deep extension. The position is clear throughout, but some arguments lack precise support, placing the response firmly in the middle tier where some parts are more fully addressed than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different main ideas. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally mechanical or faulty, such as the transition 'Analyzing the statement and explaining further,' which feels somewhat awkward and unnatural. Referencing is also slightly unclear in places, for instance, when pronouns like 'it' or 'this' refer back to broad, unspecific clauses. While logical progression is generally maintained, the flow between ideas could be smoother and more sophisticated.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the main points with a mix of everyday and attempted less common items, such as 'inflation,' 'profitable investment,' and 'fraud rates.' However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'most safest' (a double superlative) and 'sold of much more higher amount' instead of sold for a much higher amount. Spelling is generally acceptable, but occasional awkward phrasing and imprecise word choices indicate that lexical control is not yet fully polished, restricting the score to the band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting varied structures such as relative clauses and conditional ideas. However, there are some grammar and punctuation errors present throughout the text, including run-on sentences like 'not only you can gain benefit by selling it again, it could be much more profitable...' and missing prepositions or incorrect articles. Punctuation is also weak in places, leading to lengthy, comma-spliced sentences. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede overall communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument despite the grammatical slips.
