IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In few countries around the world, owning a house is understood to be quite important for families, rather renting it. And honestly people have genuine reasoning behind this view, and the fact that whether it is positive or negative thought process, is dicussed below.

Firstly, this view of giving home ownership more significance is usually there, because in countries like India people think of house ownership as crucial investment for their future, since the people there especially having any job, require some place where they can feel fully independent, comfortable and Accountable to none(such as house owners in case of renting home), and people think of this investment as future proof acommodation too, as in after retirement house ownership can save them from rental expense, and most crucially there will not be any person who can terminate the tennats contract, and get the elderly individuals out from their residences, unlike in some cases of renting a house, due to various issues which occurs in between owners and tennants, therefore, making house ownership significantly safer acommodation and future proof investment in many regions.

On other hand, I personally think of this sort of situation, as positive to a large extent, because individuals in many countries, work day and night in order to save funds, and purchase their own property, as this realistically makes their shelter permanent and is highly stable for their future acomm

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt only partially, as the second part of the question regarding whether the situation is positive or negative is cut off mid-sentence and left underdeveloped. Additionally, the word count falls short of the required two hundred and fifty words minimum, leaving the essay incomplete. The position is stated in the introduction, but the reasoning is limited and lacks the fully extended ideas expected at higher bands. To improve, you need to ensure all parts of the prompt are fully answered, flesh out your arguments with specific examples, and meet the minimum length requirement by developing your thoughts in a concluding paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation in the essay, starting with an introductory overview followed by a body paragraph explaining the reasons for homeownership. However, there is no clear overall progression because the text stops abruptly in the middle of the second body paragraph, missing a conclusion entirely. Cohesive devices are attempted, such as 'Firstly' and 'On other hand', but referencing is sometimes unclear, and the extremely long, run-on sentence in the second paragraph makes the logical flow difficult to follow. To progress, structure your essay into distinct paragraphs with clear topic sentences, use appropriate cohesive devices naturally, and always include a concluding summary.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable errors in word choice and spelling throughout the response, such as 'dicussed', 'tennats', 'acommodation', and 'acomm'. Phrases like 'genuine reasoning' and 'future proof acommodation' attempt to use slightly more advanced collocation, but they are marred by spelling mistakes and awkward phrasing. To achieve a higher band, you should expand your range of vocabulary, use less common lexical items accurately, and carefully proofread your work to eliminate spelling and word-form errors that may cause difficulty for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer uses a very limited range of structures and struggles with sentence boundaries. The second body paragraph consists of a single, excessively long sentence packed with multiple clauses, which leads to frequent errors in punctuation and grammar, such as missing articles ('rather renting it' instead of 'rather than renting it') and incorrect prepositional phrasing. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty due to this lack of proper punctuation and subordination control. To improve, focus on writing shorter, clearer sentences, vary your grammatical structures with accurate punctuation, and review basic rules of subject-verb agreement and article usage.
