IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the modern world, people see home as one of the most precious asset that one could have and in many countries some people believe that owning a home instead of renting one is very important. This essay will discuss the reasons for this phenomenon and positives of owning a home.

To commence with, I believe that people are likely to buy a home after starting their family because after having children they want stability in their life and a permanent adress to raise their children. Moreover, onenhas to buy a home at a point of life so why not today?. The prices of houses are increasing day by day, so instead of paying extra money for the house in future, people buy them right now. Not only this, people buy house to show the society about their wealth, and people work hard to save money to buy their own house and then design it accoding to them.

Nevertheless, this is a postive development because people will have a permanent address for their rest of the life which is very important for opening a bank account, filing income tax, driving license, children's admission in a school and so on. Furthermore, owning a house can give people a peace, hence they do not have a fear of getting kicked out of rented home or find new property to rent. Not only this, today buying a home is cheaper than renting a home as you have to pay a fixed amount in rent. However, one can easily morgage a house and pay that amount in EMI of their own house. As a result, after some years tehir EMI's will be cleared and now they have to pay utilitiy bills only.

In conclusion, I believe that owning a home raher than renting one is definitely a positive development for both individuals and society and It also generate employment opportunities for builders, electricians and plumbers, etc.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing why owning a home is important and giving a clear opinion that this is a positive development. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the reasons behind wanting a home are outlined with several points like stability, rising prices, and social status, but they tend to be listed rather than fully extended. Similarly, the positive impacts in the third paragraph mention banking, taxes, and peace of mind, yet these concepts lack deeper exploration. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to fully develop each generated idea with more comprehensive explanations, specific supporting examples, and a more thorough exploration of the societal implications rather than relying on brief assertions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance stated in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised to separate the introduction, the reasons, the evaluation, and the conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. Transitional phrases like 'To commence with' and 'Nevertheless' are used, but referencing and logical progression occasionally falter, such as the abrupt rhetorical question 'so why not today?' in the second paragraph. To achieve a stronger flow, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive devices organically, ensuring that transitions between sentences and paragraphs guide the reader smoothly from one point to the next without abrupt shifts.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and communicating the main message clearly. Words and phrases such as 'precious asset', 'stability', 'permanent address', and 'peace of mind' show a fair command of topic-related terminology. Nevertheless, there are noticeable word-choice, word-form, and spelling inaccuracies that reflect a standard below the next level, including 'postive' instead of 'positive', 'accoding' instead of 'according', 'onenhas' instead of 'one has', 'adress' instead of 'address', and 'tehir' instead of 'their'. To improve, the writer must expand their control of less common lexical items, refine collocation choices, and pay closer attention to spelling and accurate word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as conditional and causative ideas. There are some grammatical errors and punctuation lapses, but they rarely impede communication. Examples of errors include missing or incorrect articles ('show the society', 'give people a peace'), agreement issues, and minor prepositional or structural slips inside complex clauses ('today buying a home is cheaper than renting a home as you have to pay a fixed amount in rent'). To reach the next level, the writer needs to produce a higher frequency of error-free sentences when deploying complex structures, ensuring greater precision in articles, singular-plural agreement, and punctuation control throughout the entire piece.
