IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In recent years, some people thought that in other countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people and it has become a widely discussed issue. While some people believe that owning a home is better to live other countries because it will be better for inheritance. It is valuable and flexible for their coming future life. Others argue that renting one is important for people to live in other countries because renting home can also be a practical choice, especially for practical work and those who frequently move for their work. This essay will discuss both views and give my opinion.
On the one hand, it is often argued that owning a home is better for living in other countries. This is because it provides a financial security and a sense of stability. For example, if you will be moving to other country or a city, it become a valuable investment for future. People can make changes to their homes according to their preferences. Therefore, owning a home is very important for people who lives in other countries.
On the other hand, many people believe that renting is better option when living in other country. One main reason is that renting requires less money initially and gives people more flexibility to move. In addition, it is good for those people who frequently move for their work. For instance, renting can be a convenient choice for people who are not planning to settle permanently.
In my opinion, although both views have their advantages, I believe that owning your own home is the better approach.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing why owning a home is important and giving an opinion on whether this is a positive or negative situation. However, the development is somewhat limited. The introduction outlines both views, but the body paragraphs tend to rely on generalised statements rather than fully extended supporting arguments. For instance, the reason that owning a home provides financial security and stability is mentioned, but it is not expanded with detailed examples or deeper analysis. Furthermore, the position in the conclusion is stated rather simply. To reach a higher level, the ideas need to be more fully elaborated with more specific explanations and consistent depth across all body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, using traditional signposting phrases such as "On the one hand" and "On the other hand". However, the progression of ideas is sometimes mechanical rather than fluid. Cohesive devices are used, but referencing is occasionally unclear or repetitive, such as the frequent repetition of phrases like "living in other countries" and "for people". Paragraphing is generally logical, with separate sections for the two differing views and the final opinion, but the logical transitions between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother and more varied to avoid a formulaic feel.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing a sufficient range to discuss the topic of homeownership versus renting. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as "financial security", "valuable investment", and "permanent", but there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as "if you will be moving to other country" instead of "to another country", and "better option when living in other country" missing an article. Spelling is generally acceptable, but the lexical inaccuracies and occasional awkward phrasing cause minor disruptions for the reader, placing this response in the intermediate range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional and relative clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar, including tense consistency and article usage. Examples include "some people thought that... is very important", mixing past and present tenses incorrectly, and missing articles in phrases like "to other country" and "for practical work". Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequency of grammatical slips, particularly with prepositions and noun phrases, means that control is not fully established, though the errors rarely impede overall communication.
