IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Various people think it's more appropriate to own a house rather than to rent it. The reason for this choice could be a personal preference, safety, or financial concerns. I believe this is a more positive situation than negative.

Many people might believe owning the house gives them more authority and security. By authority, I mean they won't have to take permission from anyone before making any changes, nor they'll have to inform anybody. And when they own the place they feel more secure there, knowing no one will ask them to evacuate the place, which is both mentally and financially relaxing.

Furthermore, extending the point I just made above, owning the house in more better than renting one in terms of finances. You don't have to pay monthly or yearly bills which saves you huge amount of money in the long run. Moreover, your own property's worth might rise with time which is also financially beneficial for you, where one option is reducing you balance, the other probably increase it.

However, who prefers to rent the house, might live with insecurities. They may constantly worry about the next month's rent. While paying rent each month would just be an additional expense, it might also affect them mentally. As there are chances they wouldn't get along with their landlord which might be significantly exhausting.

To conclude, I believe, owning the house gives you more security, sense of peace, and financial stability, whereas renting one might only work negatively for you.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining reasons for homeownership and stating a clear position that it is a positive situation. Relevant ideas are presented, such as the psychological security and financial advantages of owning a home, as well as the drawbacks of renting. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the discussion on financial benefits touches upon escaping monthly bills and property appreciation, but the explanation remains somewhat general and lacks extension. To move further up, all main points need deeper elaboration with more specific supporting details or examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments, such as personal security, financial aspects, and the drawbacks of renting. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or features faulty referencing, such as the transitional phrase 'extending the point I just made above,' which disrupts the natural flow of ideas. Additionally, pronouns and referencing could be managed more smoothly to connect sentences and paragraphs more cohesively. Developing a wider variety of cohesive devices without relying on repetitive transitional markers would enhance the overall logical progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases like 'financial stability' and 'psychological security.' However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'take permission' instead of 'ask for permission' or 'obtain permission,' and 'who prefers to rent the house' rather than 'those who prefer renting.' Word form errors also appear, such as 'in more better than' instead of 'is much better than.' These lexical slips and minor inaccuracies do not impede overall communication, but they reflect a limited precision that prevents a higher score. Expanding collocation awareness and refining word forms will strengthen this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures. There are, however, some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('owning the house' instead of 'owning a house') and awkward negative inversions ('nor they'll have to inform anybody' instead of 'nor will they have to inform anybody'). Punctuation slips are also present, including comma splices and unnecessary commas around clauses. Fortunately, these grammatical errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout the response. To achieve a higher level, the writer should aim to increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise greater control over verb placement and auxiliary structures.
