IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that owning a home rather than renting one is very crucial for individuals. This is because home ownership provides financial security and greater stability. In my opinion it is positive development, although it can create financial burden on some people.
one major reason why people own a house is financial security. Rather then paying a regular rent to landlord to live in their house, but once a people buy a home they do not have to pay regular monthly rents which prevent from financial burden.Furthermore, property prices may increases over time, meaning that a house can serve as a long-term investment. For instance, people buy a home in developing area so they might get benifited due to incresing prices after several years.
Another reason for owning a home provides greater stability. Homeowners do not have to worry about landlords increasing rent or asking them to leave their property. In addition, it is also very important for families with children , as remaining in a same neighbourhood allows children to attend same school and maintain social relationships. Homeowners also have greater opportunity to renovate or upgrade the home according to their personal preferences.
Overall, I believe that owning a home is positive situation because it encourages financial independence and long-term stability. However, people should avoid taking excessive home loan to became a homeowner,as it could leds to finacial stress and depression.
In conclusion, its positive development outweighs its negative ones, that is the main reason people in some countries believe that owning a house is very important for long-term stability and financial investment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining why home ownership is important and offering a clear personal viewpoint on whether this is a positive or negative situation, fully achieving the requirements of a higher band while retaining characteristics of the level below. The ideas presented are generally relevant, covering financial security and stability, such as noting that 'property prices may increases over time, meaning that a house can serve as a long-term investment.' However, some parts of the response are more fully developed than others; for instance, the exploration of the potential financial burden mentioned in the introduction is somewhat brief and underdeveloped compared to the extensive focus on the benefits of stability. To move fully into higher bands, all main ideas, including counterarguments or negative aspects, would need equal extension and support throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression of ideas from the introduction through body paragraphs focusing on financial security and stability, to a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate different main points, such as treating financial aspects and stability in distinct sections. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or faulty due to repetitive phrasing and occasional lapses in referencing, such as the abrupt transition in the second paragraph where the sentence structure breaks down into 'Rather then paying a regular rent to landlord to live in their house, but once a people buy a home...'. While the logical flow is generally maintained, the management of cohesive devices lacks the flexibility and subtlety required for higher bands, resulting in a somewhat rigid textual structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'financial independence', 'long-term investment', and 'personal preferences'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word formation that prevent the response from achieving a higher score. Examples of lexical slips include grammatical word-form errors like 'benifited' and 'incresing', as well as awkward collocations such as 'taking excessive home loan' and 'leds to finacial stress'. Spelling errors like 'finacial' also occur. Although the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the general message clearly, the presence of these recurring lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors indicates that the range and precision of vocabulary remain at a developing level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional and relative clauses, as seen in 'people buy a home in developing area so they might get benifited due to incresing prices'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that persist throughout the text. These include missing articles ('to landlord', 'in developing area', 'in a same neighbourhood'), pluralisation errors ('children to attend same school'), and faulty subject-verb agreement or tense consistency, such as 'property prices may increases' and 'it could leds'. Furthermore, awkward punctuation and run-on structures occasionally disrupt the reading flow. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the sentence structures from achieving the higher level of accuracy and control associated with top bands.
