IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 8.0)

In numerous societies, property ownership is regarded as a major life milestone and a necessity, whereas renting is seen as merely a temporary arrangement. This preference is primarily driven by the desire for long-term financial security and cultural perceptions of stability. In my view, while this mindset promotes personal financial stability, it is ultimately a negative situation overall due to the economic pressures and social inequalities it creates.

There are two main reasons why homeownership is so highly valued in many cultures. First, real estate is widely recognized as a safe and lucrative long-term investment. Unlike paying rent, which yields no financial return, mortgage payments contribute to equity, allowing individuals to build wealth over time as property values appreciate. Second, cultural and psychological factors play a significant role. Owning a home provides a sense of permanent security, independence, and social status, assuring individuals that they cannot be evicted by landlords or subjected to sudden rent increases. In many traditional societies, homeownership is also viewed as a crucial step before settling down or starting a family.

Despite these individual benefits, I believe this strong emphasis on owning property creates a largely negative social and economic situation. On an individual level, the obsession with owning a home places immense financial strain on younger generations. Driven by societal expectations, many young adults stretch their finances to the limit or take on overwhelming, decades-long debt simply to enter the housing market. On a broader scale, a high demand for property ownership inflates housing prices, pushing property beyond the reach of lower-income families and worsening wealth inequality. Furthermore, an overemphasis on homeownership can reduce labor mobility, as homeowners are far less likely to move to other regions or countries for better career opportunities compared to renters.

In conclusion, the preference for owning a home stems from a desire for equity building and psychological security. However, this situation is overall negative because it drives up housing costs, imposes heavy debt on individuals, and limits economic flexibility. A more balanced perspective that values affordable renting would foster a healthier, more dynamic society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

Your response covers all parts of the task thoroughly and presents a fully developed position throughout. You address both why homeownership is important—such as long-term financial security and cultural perceptions of stability—and your clear perspective that this is a negative situation overall due to economic pressures and social inequalities. Your ideas are well-supported with logical explanations, such as mentioning how mortgage payments contribute to equity and how high demand inflates housing prices. To reach an even higher level, you could include more specific real-world examples or contextual nuance regarding different global housing markets, which would add further depth to your well-structured arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0

Your essay demonstrates a clear, logical progression of ideas from the introduction through the body paragraphs to the conclusion. Information and arguments are coherently organized, with each paragraph having a distinct and clear central topic. You make effective and natural use of cohesive devices to manage the flow of information, such as 'First', 'Second', 'Despite these individual benefits', and 'Furthermore'. Paragraphing is used skillfully and appropriately, separating the causes of the phenomenon from your evaluation of its consequences. To push into the highest band, you could ensure that referencing within and between paragraphs is entirely seamless and unobtrusive at all times.

Lexical Resource: Band 8.0

You display a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary that allows you to discuss complex socioeconomic issues with precision. You make skillful use of less common lexical items and natural collocations, such as 'property ownership', 'long-term financial security', 'property values appreciate', 'financial strain', and 'wealth inequality'. Word choice is generally very accurate and appropriate for an academic context. There are only occasional minor limitations or slips, which do not impede communication. To elevate your lexical resource further, aim for an even greater variety of idiomatic or sophisticated phrasing and ensure absolute precision in every single collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0

Your essay utilizes a wide range of complex grammatical structures with a high degree of control. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and you demonstrate a strong command of subordinate clauses, participial phrases, and varied sentence lengths. Examples such as 'Unlike paying rent, which yields no financial return, mortgage payments contribute to equity...' showcase your ability to handle complex syntax gracefully. Grammatical control over verb tenses, articles, plurals, and prepositions is consistently strong. To achieve perfection, you only need to eliminate the very rare, occasional slips that prevent the grammar from being entirely flawless.
