IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In many parts of the world, homeownership is considered a major life goal and often preferred over renting. This preference is driven by cultural values and financial security .In my opinion, while there are some drawbacks, this trend is largely positive.
There are several reasons why people prioritize buying a house. Firstly, owning home provides a sense of stability and security. Unlike rented accommodation, home owners do not have to worry about rising rents or being asked to leave by landlord. Secondly, in many cultures, such as in Pakistan and India, owning aproperty is a symbol of success and social status. Parents ofturn encourage their children to buy a house as it is seen as a valuable investment for the future can be passed to the next generation.
I belive this is a mostly positive development. When people own their homes, they feel more connected to their community and are more likely to maintain and improve their property. Moreover,It is a sound financial decision because paying a mortgage is like saving money, whereas rent is an expenses with no rent. However, there is a nagative side. The pressure to buy a house can lead to huge debts and stress, especially for young people who have to take large loans. Despite this long term benefits of security and investment out weight the disadvantages.
In conclusion, people prefer owning a home because of the security social prestige it offers. Although it can create financial pressure,i think it is a positive situation because home ownership

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining why homeownership is prioritized and clearly stating a position that the situation is mostly positive. Ideas are extended and supported, such as discussing financial stability, cultural symbols like in Pakistan and India, and community connection. However, there is a tendency to slightly over-generalise in places, and some ideas, such as the negative impacts of debt, are briefly stated rather than fully explored. This meets the criteria for addressing all parts of the task with a clear position throughout, while showing some of the extended development typical of higher bands without fully sustaining it across every supporting point.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from exploring the causes of homeownership to evaluating whether it is positive or negative. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, and cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Moreover'. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or slightly faulty, and referencing is not always completely clear, such as in the sentence 'an expenses with no rent' or the unfinished conclusion. The text fully establishes a clear structural framework characteristic of a solid layout, but occasionally falters in smooth transitions and precise cohesive phrasing.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'homeownership', 'social prestige', and 'financial security'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'owning home', 'an investment for the future can be passed', and 'rent is an expenses with no rent'. Spelling errors also occur, such as 'belive' and 'nagative'. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a limited precision and occasional lexical slip that keep the vocabulary profile grounded firmly in the mid-range level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional and relative clauses ('who have to take large loans'). However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('owning home', 'by landlord', 'as security social prestige'), incorrect singular/plural agreement ('long term benefits ... out weight'), and punctuation errors like missing spaces after periods and commas. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they represent persistent inaccuracies in basic sentence construction and grammatical patterns, placing the control of grammar at this specific level.
