IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 7.5)

In many countries, owning a home is considered an important life goal. People often see it as a symbol of success, stability, and financial security. While there are several reasons why home ownership is highly valued, I believe this is generally a positive situation, although it can also create some challenges.

One major reason people prefer owning a house is the sense of security it provides. When individuals own their homes, they do not need to worry about increasing rent prices or being forced to move by landlords. This stability is especially important for families with children, as it allows them to live in one place for a long time and build stronger relationships within their community.

Another reason is financial benefit. Many people believe that paying monthly rent is a waste of money because the property belongs to someone else. In contrast, buying a house is often viewed as a long-term investment. Property prices usually increase over time, so homeowners may gain financial profit in the future. Furthermore, in some cultures, owning property is linked with social status and personal achievement.

I believe this trend is mostly positive because it encourages people to plan for the future and become financially responsible. Homeowners often take better care of their properties and contribute positively to their neighborhoods. Moreover, owning a home can provide emotional comfort and independence.

However, there are also some negative aspects. In countries where owning a home is considered essential, people may feel pressured to buy property even when they cannot afford it. This can lead to financial stress and large debts. Additionally, renting can sometimes offer greater flexibility for students and workers who need to move frequently.

In conclusion, the importance of home ownership comes from the desire for security, investment, and social recognition. Although it may create financial pressure for some people, I believe it is largely a positive development because it offers stability and long-term benefits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the task fully, presenting a clear position throughout. The reasons behind the importance of home ownership, such as emotional security, long-term financial investment, and cultural status, are well-supported with extended explanations. For instance, you explain how staying in one place helps build community relationships. Furthermore, you consider both sides of the issue by discussing the positive aspects of stability alongside the negative consequences, such as financial stress and the pressure to buy prematurely. Ideas are well-developed and sustained, although a slight tendency to generalise slightly prevents the response from reaching the highest tier. To push toward that top level, you could introduce even more nuanced real-world complexities regarding housing markets rather than relying on standard arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with the reasons for owning a home in the second and third paragraphs, moving to your personal evaluation in the fourth, and addressing the counter-arguments in the fifth. Cohesive devices are used flexibly and appropriately, such as 'While there are several reasons', 'In contrast', and 'Furthermore'. Paragraphing is well-managed, creating a smooth transition from individual motivations to societal impacts and final conclusions. To achieve an even higher level of cohesion, you could make the links between paragraphs slightly more seamless by integrating transitional phrases that look back at previous points more subtly, avoiding any mechanical feel.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

Your vocabulary range is sufficient to allow flexibility and precision. You successfully incorporate less common items and demonstrate an awareness of style and collocation, using phrases like 'financial security', 'long-term investment', 'social recognition', and 'financial stress'. Word choice is generally natural, and spelling is accurate throughout. There are occasional minor lapses in stylistic precision, such as 'gain financial profit', which could be expressed more idiomatically as 'generate financial returns' or 'accumulate capital'. To reach a higher lexical band, try to incorporate a wider variety of sophisticated, less common lexical chunks and idiomatic expressions with consistent accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good control of grammar and punctuation, employing a variety of complex sentence structures alongside simple forms. Frequent error-free sentences are evident, such as conditional and subordinate clauses like 'When individuals own their homes, they do not need to worry...' and 'In countries where owning a home is considered essential...'. Control over verb tenses, article usage, and subject-verb agreement is generally strong. A few minor limitations persist, which prevent the grammar from being completely flawless. To elevate this criterion further, you could experiment with more sophisticated syntactic structures, such as inversion or participle clauses, while maintaining absolute accuracy.
