Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both why homeownership is important and whether it is a positive or negative situation. However, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed. For example, while the writer mentions reasons such as lifestyle and security, these points are stated rather than fully extended with detailed explanations or relevant examples. The position is discernible in places, particularly in the conclusion, but overall lacks consistent clarity throughout the body paragraphs. To move to a higher level, the writer should ensure that every main idea is supported by specific examples and thoroughly elaborated rather than merely listed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate the different sides of the argument, such as the advantages and disadvantages. However, cohesion within and between sentences is sometimes mechanical or faulty, as seen in repetitive transitional phrases and unclear referencing like 'they are numerous drawbacks'. While the logical progression is evident, the relationships between sentences could be smoothed out with more precise cohesive devices. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to improve the flow of information and ensure that referencing is consistently clear and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task, providing basic terms related to housing and lifestyle. There are noticeable lexical errors in word choice, spelling, and word form that cause some difficulty for the reader, such as 'conveniens' for convenience, 'seacher' for search, 'adtantages' for advantages, and 'maintainance'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but these attempts often result in unnatural collocations or inaccurate word forms. To progress further, the student should expand their lexical range, pay closer attention to spelling and word forms, and focus on using appropriate collocations in academic contexts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few faulty attempts at complex ones. Frequent errors in grammar and punctuation are present, including issues with subject-verb agreement such as 'it have numerous drawbacks' and 'individual can have', as well as article omissions and preposition errors. These persistent errors can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To improve in this area, the student should focus on basic grammatical accuracy, particularly subject-verb agreement and pluralisation, while gradually incorporating a wider variety of accurate complex sentence forms.
