IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Everyone nowadays want to live a quality of life, and want to be at a place were every basic life necessities are available. It is a believe of many people that if you own a house so you can have a good life as it cuts the renting expense. According to my research, having a house has some advantages and also some drawbacks.

Owing a house has many benefits on people life. Every month they done have to be in a stress of paying the rent of the house. If you are living in any big city or a metropolitan city so worth of owing a house will be more. The house can also act as an invest for many people. It also make you to act as the boss of the house and if you want to make any changes in the house so you do not need any approval to make it. Owing the house in city centre also has many benefits as every things are easy accessible. Main markets and offices will be at only some distance. If I speak about my self, I own a house at it has benefited me in many ways like I can easily do extra grocery and can go any resturant easily and I do not think of paying the rent of house. You only have to pay bills for the electricty, gas, and water; no extra bill is charged.

Likewise, owing a house also has some disadvantages also. If you want to move to any other location so you can't do it easily. You first have to sell that house and than move to new place but if you rent a house so you can easily do that. If you are having a big and have a small family, the maintainance cost of that house will be the other factor which you have to bear. The price of the house could also drop if any water or electricity problem in that area occurs. If you have to move to other country for career or settlement so it could not be easy to do.

The topic concludes that owing the house has both advantages and disadvantages. It is on a person how they deal with those things.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt only partially, attempting to explain why homeownership is important and whether it is a positive or negative situation, but the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the writer mentions that owning a home cuts expenses and acts as an investment, but these points are stated rather than extended with clear explanations or robust examples. The position is not always clearly articulated throughout the essay, and the conclusion merely summarises that there are pros and cons without offering a definitive perspective on the second part of the task prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organisation with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing advantages and disadvantages, and a short conclusion, but the overall progression lacks strong logical flow. Cohesive devices are sometimes inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'If you' and repetitive phrase structures like 'owing a house has many benefits' and 'owing a house also has some disadvantages also'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs feels somewhat mechanical and disjointed.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and collocation that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, such as writing 'It is a believe' instead of 'belief', 'invest' instead of 'investment', 'resturant', 'electricty', and repeatedly using the incorrect form 'owing' instead of 'owning'. Less common lexical items are attempted with frequent inaccuracies, reflecting a restricted control over word formation and precise terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic complex forms. Attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, featuring frequent errors such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Everyone nowadays want', 'Every month they done have'), incorrect prepositions ('own a house at it has benefited me'), and awkward conditional structures ('if you own a house so you can have'). These frequent grammatical errors cause some difficulty and strain for the reader throughout the text.
