IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 4.5)

In modern world having personal home than giving rent is more convinent for people in few countries . This depends on situation of people but I think having your own house is much convinent for people . It provide alot of facilities one of them is not struggling for rent . For instance if nowadays we see in world different states in world like U.K and U.S living there in leased house is extremely high . Some students have to pay double shifts to pay for that rent . If someone have their personal state there will be less changes of worrying for charges also they don't have to worry for putting things . In some places people even can't pet animals because of landlord fear . Owning home is also get difficult for anyone reason is that people sell their home too much high payment that normal person can't buy so they choose rental home . In conclusion, I would say owning and renting both have their own benifits but seeing on opportunities it's better to choose rental home .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response responds to the task only minimally, as it is significantly under the required word count limit of two hundred and fifty words, reaching only one hundred and eighty-one words. Furthermore, while the writer touches upon why home ownership is important and mentions reasons such as avoiding rent struggles and landlord restrictions, the ideas are limited and under-developed. The position shifts towards the end of the conclusion where the writer surprisingly suggests that choosing a rental home is better, which contradicts the earlier statements. To improve, you must meet the full length requirement and clearly develop your stance with fully supported, extended ideas throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

Information and ideas are not arranged coherently enough to establish a clear overall progression. The essay relies on very basic cohesive devices such as "For instance" and "In conclusion", but the connections between sentences are often weak or repetitive. Paragraphing is poorly managed, as the entire body of the essay is crammed into a single block of text rather than being divided into distinct paragraphs for different viewpoints. To achieve a higher band, you need to structure your writing into clear paragraphs—an introduction, separate body paragraphs for reasons and your opinion, and a conclusion—while using a wider range of logical connectors to guide the reader smoothly through your arguments.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, employing simple words like "convinent", "things", and "places" repeatedly. There are noticeable errors in spelling and word choice, such as spelling "convenient" incorrectly as "convinent" multiple times, using "personal home" instead of "own home", and using "landlord fear" instead of "restrictions imposed by landlords". These errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, you should aim to use a wider and more precise range of vocabulary, avoiding spelling mistakes and opting for more natural collocations suitable for academic writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic compound forms. Attempts at complex structures are often faulty, such as in the sentence "If someone have their personal state there will be less changes of worrying for charges", which contains subject-verb agreement errors and misuse of vocabulary. Frequent errors are present, including missing articles, incorrect pluralisation, and poor preposition use inside grammatical patterns. To reach a higher band, you need to demonstrate a greater variety of complex sentence forms with better control over grammar, punctuation, and tense consistency.
