IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Nowadyays, people are moving to different countries for better pay, good education and to have a proper life style. Due to which some people those who move to other countires stay on rent while others own a home.I personally believe, that owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people and it can be considered as positive sitiuation for sure.
One of the main reason for my view that it is considered as positive situation is because people those who prefer to stay on rent have to pay higher amount.Due to this their half of the income they earn goes into paying the rent.Because of this, more people prefer to buy their own home rather than paying rent to the owners. For example, last year I moved to canada from India for higher studies and my half of the income goes into paying rent because of which I am thinking of buying a home on EMI.So instead of paying rent it would be better to pay EMI as in the end I would have my own house. As a result, this can lead to considering it as positive situation.
Another reason for my view is that it is important for people owning a home because they can live freely in their own house without being in fear of paying rents and people can even live with their family too if they buy the one. For instance, I have one friend of mine who shifted to my city last year, during starting days he was staying on rent alone and couldn't brought his family with him as rents were too high at that time. Before few days back he bought a home and started living with his family, and now he says that this he made a good decision and this would also get consider as financial investment too and he can now stay freely in his own house without being in any fear of paying the rents. As a result, it turned out to be as positive situation for him.
In conclusion, owning a home rather than renting one is important for people because it can be considered as one of the financial investment for them and they can live freely without being in any fear of paying rent and living on terms of house owners, as result I think this is a positive situation for sure.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by explaining why home ownership is important and stating a clear personal position that it is a positive situation. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the point regarding the high cost of rent compared to paying a mortgage is reasonably supported with a personal example about moving to Canada, the second main reason is somewhat repetitive and less clearly extended. The ideas lean towards generalisation, but the prompt's requirements are nonetheless sufficiently met to achieve this level. To reach a higher standard, the writer would need to fully develop both body paragraphs with broader societal implications rather than relying solely on personal anecdotes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, ensuring the writer's stance is visible throughout. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct reasons, though referencing and cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on phrases like 'Another reason for my view' and 'As a result'. While logical organisation is present, the transitional links between sentences occasionally feel abrupt, meaning the progression of ideas is not entirely smooth. To improve cohesion further, the writer should employ a wider and more natural variety of conjunctions and referencing expressions without overusing formulaic transition markers.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing enough range to communicate the main arguments about renting versus buying property. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'proper life style', 'during starting days', 'couldn't brought', and 'financial investment' used in the singular where a plural or different modifier would suit better. Spelling and word-form errors occur, but they generally do not impede overall communication. To move to a higher band, the student needs to demonstrate a more flexible and precise control of vocabulary, incorporating less common lexical items accurately and improving word collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting multi-clause structures such as 'One of the main reason for my view that it is considered as positive situation is because people those who prefer...'. There are some errors in grammar, articles, and punctuation throughout the text—for instance, missing articles ('to canada', 'as positive sitiuation'), subject-verb agreement slips ('One of the main reason'), and awkward relative clauses ('people those who move'). Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede the reader's understanding. To achieve a higher score, the writer must produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and maintain tighter control over prepositions and article usage.
